A bit scared now!

Hi,
I found lump(s) in my right breast three weeks ago due to the tenderness and dull ache I noticed. Was going on holiday with my young son for half term so I went thinking they would just go away. I’ve no history of bc in my family, I am 45 with three children a single parent. I had an appiontment monday and I thought she’d just say well done for checking but all ok. She looked pretty serious and there are a number of lumps (?) None in the glands just above the nipple so on top, still quite painful. My appointment with the consultant is a week monday 30th and my mammogram is next tuesday, so its all a bit more of a possibility. I read that its probably a cyst but I can’t be ill as I’m on my own… how do I cope? How long does it take to know? What happens then?

Hi foxy a breast care nurse will be along soon to give you advice.xx

Hi Foxy45 and welcome to the BCC forums

I am posting a link to the ‘Worried about breast cancer’ section of the website where you will find further support ideas such as our helpline and an information booklet about being referred to a breast clinic which you may find helpful to read:

Best wishes

Thanks Lucy and so pleased I found this just having a wobble today I think…some amazing women on here I wish you all well  xx

HI there - the not knowing is most definitely the worst bit…we often talk on here about distracting yourself, getting through each day until the results are in etc. I am currently waiting for 2nd year mamogram results after some difficult results two years ago and treatment - I know how to wait now and its getting easier…just do other things, try not to dwell on it, don’t waste energy on worry if you can help it…use it for some fab and lovely things with your children maybe? I KNOW its all easier said than done! Sad to say I took to wine to get through but it was only temporary and not a huge ammount anyway, but it helped!
best of luck

Hi there Foxy,

So, you’re on the merry go round now, you have done all the right things, you have been to your doctor, you have an appointment with a consultant and have your mammogram appointment.

Do try to remember, and this is from experience myself, who has been where you are right now, the waiting for the appointment, this has happened to all of us, and because your appointment has been so quick, know that all GP referrals have to be within two weeks, those are the NICE guidelines. At this stage you have been referred to clinic for further assessment. This so far is good.

As scary as it is, and it is, you will get through this time, call the helpline here, they are fantastic, they will help you through and use this place as a sounding block to how you are feeling, people here will hold your hand and love you better, they did for me, when I was there, right where you are now.

Write your questions down as you think of them. Your consultant is the person who is in the know and he/she will guide you. Techicians will perform your mammogram and if your lump is palapable, if nothing is picked up on mammogram, (which is quite common, if you have dense breasts) you will likely have an ultra sound, which will determine any further need for biospies.

The waiting is the hard part, and remember, that when doctors look at us, their faces can change, as they are focusing on us, and we cannot read what is going on in their heads. Your GP has been vigilant, and has done all she can for now,in referring you, try to get as much rest as you can and read leaflets, supplied by registered breast cancer organisations, such as here, not any old rubbish on the internet as the information can be outdated and quite scary.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your wise words Moorcow and yes wine will figure in distracting me temporarily :). Thank you too sommer I notice you’ve been very supportive to a number of people here, so generous of you. I think it just became a bit more real today with mammogram appiontment being confirmed for next tuesday. I slept this afternoon and find myself saying 9 out of 10, 9 out of 10 like a mantra. Foxy x

Hi foxy45

I have today been to see my consultant, found several lumps 4 weeks ago. they all turned out to be cysts today, which i was 90% sure they would as they were quite painfull! so needless to say pretty relieved.

My gp wasn’t even going to refer me to the breast clinic until i pushed as she said they were the “wrong Shape” !!

So stay positive, your appt should be with you soon mine came within less than 10 days and appointment as hosp was within 2 weeks of seeing my gp x

take care
Cathy xx

Thanks Cathy so pleased to hear your news :).
