A week post Rads

Hi everyone - First of all…Happy Mother’s Day to all those mums xxxxx

I am a week and a bits post rads and was wondering if I should be feeling this bleh? I’ve also got a cold which is definitely adding to my self pitying today…

I’ve been sick quite a bit over the last few days, feeling Very tired and achey (Had radio to my hip)

Just wondering if I should still be like this after this time?

Hope you are all ok

Hi there

I’m 4 days post rads and I haven’t felt sick but have been tired and emotional…my skins red and sore especially underneath the breast next to my scar.

I was told by the rad nurses that we carry on ‘cooking’ for another 10 - 15 days from the end of the treatment and can expect to feel a bit grotty, after that we should slowly improve, think all we can do is rest and look after ourselves and look forward to the spring.

take care

Hi poannie,

I fainted and was sick all over the place 5 days after the end of my rads. Was sick and dizzy for about another week after that then about 14 days after the last rad I just began to feel better. I was physically and mentally exhausted and it took about 6 weeks to begin to shift the tiredness but I reckon it was the combined effects of the chemo, surgery and rads.

Your cold probably isn’t helping but if you don’t begin to feel better in a few days I’d phone your BCN for reassurance.

Hi to everyone this all sounds very scary I’m starting rads this week so read your posts with interest maybe nerves have something to do with these awful side effects as well as the treatment its self.
Does it help to have something to eat prior rads or is it best to go on an empty tum any tips ladies. Good luck love Linda xxx

Eat as normal Linda because some days with machines being out of action you can be waiting a while, although my longest wait has only been 50 mins, just slap on the cream and drink plenty of fluids during the day(s)

Hi Linda,

don’t be scared of rads, most people don’t get bad side effects, some people are just unlucky :-(.

i got a bit red and itchy but made sure i kept using the aqueous cream regularly and kept some pure aloe gel in the fridge for when things warmed up!

the worst for me was that i wasn’t prepared for just how tired i would be and it didn’t kick in until the last week of rads. two weeks after finishing, i am still tired but getting better.

i made sure i had a snack before i went, nothing too heavy, plus a rumbling tum on the bed was a bit embarrassing  drink plenty too.

good luck, you will be surprised how quickly it goes.

treat yourself kindly,

I think a few of you who have replied to poannie are having rads to your breast area, but I think poannie is talking about rads to her hip for secondaries.

Poannie,

I had rads to my hip and lower spine a couple of years ago and I got sick after the rads was finished - had probs with nausea as well as sickness and the pain increased. This did go on for quite a while. The rads doctor seemed to think it was unusual to be sick a while after the treatment and I got the impression she didnt think it was related. Suspect you and I would beg to disagree with her!

I am start rads again to my lower spine this coming week. Am really hoping it isn’t any worse this time as they are treating a tumour to the side as well.

Dawn

Thank you Dawn xxxx
(Good luck)

Linda

I found it helped to take a drink with me to have immediately after the radiotherapy, before I drove home. I usually had still lemonade or lemon barley.

Good luck to you all.
