advice on preventing nail loss?

Hi

I finished chemo about 7 weeks ago. Had 2 FEC then 2 Tax but was stopped as I was non-responsive. Hoped to get off lightly after only 2 Tax but seems it’s not to be! Just noticed today that I have 2 loose fingernails, they look like they have air bubbles under them (if that makes sense?).

I was religiously applying creams while I was on the Tax and for about 3 weeks after. Once they have started to loosen is it too late to save them? I really don’t want to loose them, my hair is starting to grow back, I’m getting my energy back … I don’t need any more crap side effects!

Any advice on ANYTHING I can do to try to stop them falling out?

Thanks

Hi - probably best to check with your Breast Care Clinical Nurse Specialist if you have access to one. We’re all different but my Nurse advised that once my nails had started to get discoloured they were already dead and chunks would fall off anyway - that’s what happened. My fingernails soon regenerated though (after 3 lots of docetaxol) and, if anything, are stronger now than before chemo.

Good luck.

Hi smiffy,
I had 6x docitaxol and my nails were really good until about a month after the last one, then noticed discolouration on 6 of my nails, tried everything but they eventually fell off/snapped, sorry not much help but wish I had been forewarned of this.
Sorry to be grim.
