Is no one worried about strong pain killers? Been trying to do without to protect my liver…
Well 36 hours after last injection pain started to fade but i gave in and took pain killers and managed a night’s sleep. Feel so much better for that. Dont know what my onc will say when i tell him i stopped after 3 injections out of 7… he had said he would not give me tax without the injections!
Every orifice is dry… and my more personal ones are really sore anyone else got that problem? And skin which was OK on FEC now really dry… whinge whinge whinge…No pain yippeeeeeeeee
Hi all

my mouth is very very dry and so are my eyes. got some pastles for mouth from drs but dont really help just take loads of sips of water all teh time, makes eating hard as well…got drops for eyes and they help a bit.oh and have found skin dry too but just slap loads of E45 on and that really helps
anyway off to the sofa probably for the next week now lol

Pauline and julie glad you meet up and had a few bevvys
Julie hope your ok xx
love to all Sally xxx
Sally glad to hear you are being looked after…hope you will not get too rough a ride this time. I am sure you are right about the pills… i am just an obstinate old b…h! My husband (retired dentist) was saying similar but who listens to hubs… whatever their credentials???
Good luck to us all as we stagger down this dry gritty road- all things will come to an end i suppose…
HI,Chris i know about dry orifice and your private one is one of the SE …try to drink water so the wee is less acid and try a bit of soda bicarbonate in your drinking water also helps to gargle your dry mouth live soft feeling on your tongue…painkillers and liver i think chemo does damage the liver itself so with some painkillers to help yourself till the pain is gone is not going to be big problem…Sally i am glad you are getting there i know is stragle …but you are doing so well…after few days you will feel good again and after 3 weeks you even less than that will be over for you…take care…Christina
Hi julie and sally, hope your both not feeling too bad on day 3 ish.
Keep taking the pills. julie guess wot i brought back off holiday…a bl…dy cold. feel sh.t again now. dont seem to have been right all the way through this one. One min im freezing next im sweating buckets, can’t win.
Only1cris sorry to hear your having a rough time, most of your SE sound familiar, mouth was foul for 2 weeks and i dont mean swearing, dry and furry and no taste. that seems to have improved now just ready for no 5 on thursday.

Hiya, another awful rainy day in Plymouth! Have lost most of my hair in the last 2 days (that quick!), my scalp is incredibly sore and sensitive, gave the wig its first airing when me and my granddaughter went into town for some retail therapy. She’s only 9 but loves spending my money!!
Some of you talk about really bad aches and pains, apart from a couple of days of achy knee joints, I haven’t had that, though i believe the SE’s can change each session so maybe I’ve got the ones I haven’t had yet to look forward to in the future! also never got either of the bowel problems! I did get awful sickness (not just nausea) and excrutiating heartburn, they were the worst, now left with just feeling exhausted.
It does make me feel less alone when I read all your experiences, there is always someone else at any given time who feels a lot worse than me, bit of consolation! Hopefully, you all feel the same consolation when you’re feeling bad, we’re never alone!

Hi, I am in my second week following second Tax. Finding your comments really interesting and helpful although unable to go back through all of them so apologies if you’ve discussed any of these already.
What are the comments to do with dark nail varnish - is that a Tax or FEC thing? I have 3 Tax then 3 FEC in total to look forward to. Moons on thumbs are a bit pink but no nail probs yet. Does the nail varnish help you keep them? Used cold cap for first chemo but hair started falling out by the clump 2 weeks later so would like to avoid loss of other body parts. Didn’t realise hair would fall out again second cycle (this time no cold cap, fell out day 8)
Any advice on face cream and sunscreen - face is really red and sore since day 8 after 2nd Tax. Have been using simple cleanser and moisturiser but even that seems too harsh. Scalp really itchy and sore too - massaging in baby oil but any other suggestions very gratefully received.
Thrush type mouth symptoms have been my worst thing together with muscle and joint aches and tiredness. Nystatin mouth wash is good but foul in the flavour I have (aniseed snot!) and taking anti-fungals from chemo date rather than week later has helped no end. Melon from the fridge and fruit ice lollies are good too. Favourite of mine if you arent too queasy - rice pudding from the fridge - soft and cold!

Hi Peg,
While you’re waiting for replies from your fellow forum users, here is a link to one of BCC’s publications called Coping with hair loss, which gives some practical information on hair and scalp care:
breastcancercare.org.uk/upload/pdf/Breast_cancer_and_hair_loss_ERJ.pdf
Breast Cancer Care also provides a service called HeadStrong in some areas. It is a free service run by specially trained volunteer advisors, offering practical information and support around hair loss due to cancer treatment, on an individual appointment basis. Here is a link to more information:

I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards,

Hi Fuzzypeg,
The dark nail polish is to keep the light off your nails which is supposed to help. I find that hard to believe as my toe nails were the worst and they are in the dark most of the time,I lost several. I found it better to use nail oil frequently on my finger nails to stop them drying out. It did not stop them going funny, ridges appeared and the ends of my nails became unattached to the skin below so I had to keep them short. I did not lose any finger nails. I was only on Tax.
I was advised to continue using the same cream I have always used and did not have problems with that. You are supposed to use a high factor sun cream, I stuck with what I normally use but in a higher factor. I was told to use Aqueous cream on my scalp and then rinse it off. That worked.
Thrush is a nuisance so I just blasted it with Fluconazole 50ml per day for 5 days from day of Tax. This was prescribed by my Oncologist. Take ice lollies with you when you go for chemo and suck them to keep your mouth cold.
Most sweet things go down well, trifles, creme caramel etc. I found that most drinks tasted foul so I ended up drinking mostly horlicks and ginger beer.
Hope this helps.

Hi all, back from Bosham, what a lovely place!! as stomach has now settled the weight i lost has gone back on! think i need to cut down this week!
Pauline hope your cold is better! My nose continually runs at the moment it is driving me mad!
I also have had the dry skin problem, lots of body butter!
Julie and sally hope you are doing ok,and had a chance to enjoy the sunshine!
hope everyone else is coping!! love debs xxx
Re nails I painted finger and toe nails and kept them painted the whole time I was on chemo.I lost one big toe nail which was a bit dodgy before I started chemo but the others were ok.I think it is mainly taxotere that is the culprit-even though your toes are covered up most of the time the light they do get can be enough.I was following advice from my chem unit and losing my nails was one se I didnt get.I also found that sucking ice during chemo seemed to protect against any sore mouth probs.I am over 2 years down the line from tax now and apart from pn I am fine.
hello
day 4 of tax, not to bad, aches and chest tightness which i had last time,i take a frozen bottle of water ,which starts to melt when i have chemo so i drink it while the chemo is going in,mouth gets dry but touch wood dosent get sore, i also rinse every morning with hot salt water before i have anything to eat or drink and then mouth wash at night,
E i find sweet things taste alot better than savoury, good excuse to eat more sugary things,
debs my nose runs all the time aswell, yes it is annouying,
i paint my finger nails a lovely purple and am keeping them short as they get abit painful, i think what might work for one person dosent always work for others but hey i will try anything

Afternoon all. Haven’t posted for a while, as been not feeling too good after chemo. Mainly suffered from thrush in mouth which does make everything taste foul and made me feel more nauseous than normal and for longer. Has been treated now though and I will ask onc doc to prescribe course of fluconazole for next treatment as I really can do without thrush…but then can’t we all.
Your advise on ice cubes and cold stuff I will keep in mind. Good job Waitrose has icecream on special offer at the moment. At least something good about rubbish weather this summer, supermarkets get stuck with loads of ice they need to sell cheap
About nails. My cuticles are a bit of a mess at the moment, but so far all are still attached and hopefully will stay that way. Have also lost all hair, from what I can hear, the cold caps are not that effective, so glad didn’t opt for that.
Anyway, time to cook dinner for the girls. Glad to read all your golden tips again.
Bye for now.
Puk x
Julie, glad to hear your doing ok this time. I know you didn’t sneeze on me lol, i think i must just have a runny nose like some of you. It’s anoying having to always have tissues handy.
I have painted my nails dark purple, my toe nails went very tender so hope i don’t loose any over next couple of swamps.
Off for blood tests and meeting with ON tomorrow, hope i don’t end up delayed, need to get them over and done with.
Horace and puk, nice to here from you both again
Thanks to everyone taking the time to share their valuable tips with us, they really are a godsend.
Luv to everyone, Pauline xxx
