Advice on Washing Wig Please

Hi everyone,

My mum has decided its time to give her wig a wash and I just wondered if anyone had any tips? I think its cold water and a little shampoo???

Thanx

Is it an acrylic wig or real hair?

If it is acrylic, you should use specialist products on sale from any wig supplier or wig website. I do vaguely remember Trevor Sorbie saying you could use ordinary fabric conditioner for clothes on acrylic wigs, but if you are shopping for shampoo anyway, you might as well pick up both. You can also buy special hair sprays for acrylic wigs.

If it is real hair, then you wash and condition like real hair.

They warn you not to use heated styling products on acrylic wigs, because, obviously, they can melt. I discovered however, that I got extra body into my acrylic wig by holding it upside down while aiming the hairdryer at it on a COLD setting. When nearly dry, I’d put it on the wig stand and gently comb it (so I didn’t lose the volume I’d created).

A new wig is available on NHS prescription every 6 months.

Hiya,

if its acrylic she can get some great specialist shampoo for it. I got mine from ‘Trendco’ where I got my wig from and they also gave me a washing leaflet too.

I wash mine with special acylic hair shampoo. Then I rinse it out well, after which I give it a final rinse in tepid water that has some bog standard fabric softener in it. Its important to make sure the wig is rinsed thoroughly afterwards to get rid of all remaining fabric softener.

Once washed I dab it with a clean towel, pop it on the wig stand and gently brush it. Once dry I spray it with ‘fibre hair conditioning spray’ and brush it.

The important thing to remember if the wig is not real hair is use tepid or cold water, NOT hot. Also, don’t wash it too often as it will start to look quite ‘wiggy’ pretty quickly and so will need replacing.

Hope that helps,

Kelly

I went to a specialist wig maker to have mine cut and styled as i did not like the original style
Mine is acrylic
The guy there (who makes superb wigs for both cancer patient and amateur dramatics) said there was no need to buy any fancy shampoo or condition for washing acrylic wigs as it was a waste of money
He says put the wig in a pillow case and tie the end
wash in the washing machine on a delicate wash wth soap powder and fabric conditioner
He said a wig should be washed as often as you used to wash your own hair. I have not washed it as much as that as tend to not wear mine all day just eves
WIg guy says he washes all his wigs in this way and they come out lovely. I have tried it too and agree!

I didn’t have a wig stand so hung it over the shower head. Frightened my teenage son more than once when he got up in the night for the loo !
