Hi
Please can someone help - I started FEC Chemo on 22 Feb (last monday) today my Mum has been rushed into hospital with pnuemonia, i am ok to go and visit or should i stay away. Hospital does have wards shut with Norovirus bug. Liz
Hi Liz
I would phone the out of hours oncology number and ask their advice.
I hope your mum improves quickly.

I am afraid I think you should stay away as pneumonia can be infectious and your immune system will soon be at its lowest.I woulnt do anything till you have spoken to your bcn or the chemo unit though.
Hi
Sorry to say you should stay away. Hospitals are the worst place to be for bugs and virus. Your immune system will be very low and you must look after yourself. If you phone the hospital i am sure you would be able to speak with your mum when she is upto it…just explain your situtaion. Hope she gets better soon.

Hi,
I agree with the others. Your immune system will be very low and getting lower (lowest point is between 10 and 14 days after chemo) even if you feel ok and you will be putting yourself at risk of contracting all sorts of bugs generally. The norovirus is horrendous I gather and there is no way you should be going anywhere near sites of occurence.
I ended up in A&E and then oncology 10 days after my first chemo with virtually no immune system and had to have a couple of days on iv antibiotics - I felt fine at the time and hadn’t been near anyone with a cold/flu etc (it was Aug 07).
Please don’t underestimate the strength of the chemo on your body - I know it must be awful for you not to visit your mum and at such a difficult time for you but like lupin says, perhaps you could speak on the phone. And I’m sure the last thing your mum would want would be for you to catch something either from her or from visiting her.
Sorry to be down about it but it really is best to stay away for the time being.
Hope your mum makes a quick recovery and your chemo treats you kindly.
Liz
Hi
Thanks everyone for your advice, spoke to onc on monday morning, they said i could go in mon and tue but to check with ward sister as to infections on ward. Luckily Mum was transferred to a brand new ward on Mon am so i could visit. Unfortunately she is still in but getting better.
Thanks again Liz xx
