Age Discrimination and Charities
Age Discrimination and Charities I realise this might sound very much like sour grapes but feel very sad that as I am 44 I can not access certain charities. I know there are finite resources but it means my children are ultimately the ones that suffer and that feels unfair just because I am an older mum.
Does the age discrimination act cover charities?

Which charities? Kate, can you be more specific? Maybe there are other charities which do not help young people. Why are you needing to access them?
Hi Kate,
The younger women issue is very “woolly” I think. I am 47, have 2 children of 15 and 10 years and don’t really know if I am a younger women with bc! I certainly feel young, statistically I am in the minority of women diagnosed i.e only 20% of all women diagnosed are under 50, but then they start equating that with being pre-menopausal and I don’t qualify as I had an early menopause (I was 43). So I often feel like I’m in no mans land and if I do reply to something on younger womens forum apologise for crashing thier site!
I may be missing something but what has this to do with charities?
Hope you are doing ok Kate.
Take care

I didn’t particularly want to name charities but there are 2 which spring to mind which cater for women with young children but the woman has to be under 40.
I am trying to access them as I’ve been told I’ve got between a few months to a year to live and there are things I would like to do with the children who are 9 and 6. This costs money and my hubby is on low income. I can get a grant from MacMillan but I need that to get certain things in the house.
Perhaps I’m being greedy but it seems unfair that we can’t afford to do things with the children so that they have something different to remember . I’ve always been the main wage earner so it will be very difficult financially after I’ve gone.
My infant and junior age children are going to lose their mum at a young age despite the charities seeing me as too old for help and that seems doubly unfair .

Hi Kate,
I don’t think that you wanting to do some nice things with your children is being greedy and I agree with you that it shouldn’t be your age that is the issue. Surely the fact that you have secondaries, have sadly been given a poor prognosis and have young children is what matters.
It’s so wrong that on top of everything you’re having to cope with at the moment you are worrying about money, my heart goes out to you.

It’s not just charities that are Ageist. I get annoyed wheneverIi see discounts for senior citizens at garden centres, DIY shops, Pub Restaurants etc. when there are young er people permanently unable to work, who could do with similar discounts.
I don’t feel like a real charity case, just want parity with the “oldies”.
I do get some discounts by flashing my NUS card - studying helps kill the boredom of not being able to work. Unfortunately, many of the organisations that give NUS discounts are not the sort of place a middle aged woman shops.
Maybe BCC could work on some large corporations to give similar discounts to those on Incapacity Benefits / DLA even if just in October each year? It could perk you up to have say, a spa day, new clothes etc. with a 10% discount.
