I always go on my own. Don’t find it a problem.
Only issue is that I can’t make myself a cup of tea and have to ask the nurses. But they are very good.
Fed up with the waiting around though. Like everyone else I guess.
BTW Nymeria - are you named after a direwolf…? (song of ice and fire)
I was very glad to have my OH with me on the first one as I went a bit mental, couldn’t talk to anyone and just cried silently the whole time, so he kept “Little Miss Chatty” the nurse who administrered it off my case. I didn’t know how I’d be feeling so we didn’t drive, and he couldn’t drive at the time anyhow (having just come out of hospital himself) so we went on the bus. And I got an ambulance back to the hospital later that evening, but that’s a different story…
But I’ve done almost all of the whole cancer thing on my own, and felt better that way. If I was there on my own, I didn’t have to worry about the other person. I dragged my youngest daughter to the hospital for my first rads as punishment for her, but it was more punishment for me, so didn’t do that again.
I drove myself there and back for chemo, rads, appointments, (all except first chemo when we went on the bus) and brought my Kindle and headphones with me so I could just zone out if I felt I needed to. Most people don’t talk to you if you’ve got headphones in, so it’s good if you aren’t feeling chatty.
My OH came with me for the first one. I was very pleased as didn’t really know what to expect. He’s quite squeamish so I suggested it’s not necessary now. Sometimes he turns up at the end and if I feel like it we go for something to eat. One time he was supposed to join me in time for Onc appt and turned up just after I came out - text me to say he was in the waiting area - needless to say he was in the dog house! So now I mostly just go by myself.
He has generally been great, but is running out of steam a bit now!
I have come to realise this is quite a lonesome journey.
Have done all chemo on my own except the very first one … and to be honest, I think you worry about the other person so much … its not worth it… much preferred going on my own … doing my own thing… dozing off if I want to … and then going home. So much easier. And I felt in control. Done most of my consultations on my own too. Early days Mum came … but seems easier to do it myself, make notes etc … x
My OH came with me for my ACs and my first TAX, but the IV piriton stuff just makes me conk out - so I actually feel more comfortable on my own as I can just sleep through the whole thing (inc the cold cap!) without feeling as though I should talk to him seeing as he’s taken the day off to keep me company.
Thanks everyone for your v useful comments/adviice - have decided that I will drive to Worcester Royal for appt at 10:20 and Oh will join me at about 3:00, it took some persuading him to do this as he feels he should be there but I have told him Sade went Monday at 8:30 & didn’t leave til 3:30!
At Worcester parking is v high but if you are having chemo it costs £1 which is good also you are allowed friends/family etc when you are having your session - it’s a nice light airy room & the nurses are lovely ( short staffed but what’s knew)
Love to all especially those going on Friday 9th for their session. Xx
Can’t get my head around the different policies that each hospital have with regards to not only parking but to having a chemo buddy with you when you have treatment. I attend Preston Royal and I was given a free parking permit that covers me for Preston and Chorley Hospitals and also allows me to park in their disabled bays free of charge as often as I need to. I can also take a chemo buddy with me into the Oncology department when I am having my infusion - if I am there at lunch time then a lovely lady comes round with a trolley full of sandwiches, soup, hot meals and drinks - again all free of charge. Maybe I should post this as a separate topic and then we could get an idea of which hospital has what policy - although I suspect this might not be allowed on here?
Yes super trouper think it would be a great idea to see the difference in hospital Policies around the country re parking, relatives, food & drink, cold cap etc (never given the option for cold cap) so go for it!
Hugs Jo xx
I finised my treatment this year 6 FEC-T and 18 herceptin. I had either my OH or daughter with me for each one. My daughter loved the time free from her 3 young children. So it was good for her as well. I have a free car parking ticket for the whole treatment including radiotherapy. It has been extended as I am waiting to have my portacath taken out and have to go back every 3/4 weeks to get it flushed out.
Decision made I’m just leaving now, decided I would drive up and hubby will join me about 3.00 pm and bring me home. Got a feeling it’s going to be a long day!
