Anastrazole or Tamoxifen , i'm concerned

hi everyone.

My oncologist has said I should go on Anastrazole rather than Tamoxifen, as I’m post menopausal but I’m confused. My sister who is also post menapaysal has been put on Tamoxifen. I’m concerned about the side effects of anastrazole, particularly bone pain and hair thinning. My oncologist was clearly in a hurry and wasn’t keen to discuss much with me. I felt rushed and now feel very uncertain about it all. Anyone have any views? I’m waiting for a DEXA scan to check my bone density.

Hi Fuffs

I’m on anastrozole siince December - post menopausal and no choice.

It seems that different brands give varying side effects - my hair was thinning but is much better now I am on a different brand, the aches and pains are therre but is hard to distiguish between arthritis flare up and side effects. Again better now I am on a different  brand.

It seems that every one reacts differently tp brands so what is good for one is not so good for another.

There is loads of info on this thread.

It’s the usual cancer thing - everyone is different

Good luck

Beryl

Hi Beryl

Thanks for that. I’ve done some research and it seems that Anastrozole has shown to be more effective than Tamoxifen in reducing recurrence in post menopausal women. There was quite a big trial recently, involving 1000 wimen. I am concerned over the possible side effects, don’t fancy the rhunning hair etc but it’s very helpful to know that you can try a different brand. I’ll be on Arimidex, have you been on that? Of cousre if my genetic trsting shows BRACA or one of the other genes involved with BC, I’ll be having a double mx anyeay so no hormone treatment I assumee strangely enough I feel more disturbed about the ongoing treatment than the surgery and duagnosis. I aupose you just get through the early stuff in a bit of a rush and then you get time to think about it all. Too much thinking and not enough cake pwrhaps!! X Francine
