Annual mammogram - or not?

Hi,
I’ve been given a date for my annual mammogram and i’m a bit confused (doesn’t take much)!
I was told that it would be a year from the date of my operation (DCIS/WLE) and that they were quite strict on this. But, the date i have is for about 10 1/2 months from my operation. Should i put it off and have it 12 months after op or what? How important is it to wait 12 months do you think?

I’d appreciate any advice. Hope you all have a good weekend.

Thanks x

Not sure there’s a hard and fast rule - mine is this month and equates to the anniversary of my diagnosis - my surgery was end April / beginning May.

Nina

Thanks for responding Nina, i wouldn’t think 6 weeks will make too much of a difference.

cheers x

Hello there, Just to reassure you - I think you’ll be fine going for the mammogram, even though it’s a few weeks earlier than you’d thought it would be.

When I was first diagnosed with bc ten years ago, they were really strict and wouldn’t routinely mammogram you until the 12-month mark. But I’ve been told it’s changed recently - as long as you have at least six months since you last had a mammogram, you’re ok.

I’m sure your mammogram results will be fine - please let us know, then we can help you celebrate - perhaps with real wine/champagne for you and “virtual-online” alcohol for us!!!

Hi Shelly,

Thanks for your advice, i’m going to cancel the appointment as it’s very short notice and doesn’t fit in with work at the moment. I think i’ll put it off for a couple of weeks and then it will be more in line with my dx date. I had it in my mind a rough date and now i feel ‘thrown’ that it was soo early, that i’m not emotionally prepared for it, hope that doesn’t sound daft!

I’ll certainly be celebrating my first all clear (fingers crossed) but i’ll have to wait till Easter as i’ve decided to give up alcohol for Lent! Gave up cheese last year and that was the first time i did anything for Lent since i was a child. I don’t practice any religion but i do believe there’s something! Anyway, it will be VERY hard for me as i love a glass of wine with my meals at the weekend, hey ho just my way of saying ‘thanks’! I’ll let you know if all okay.
Take care x

Hi Shelly,

Clicked twice!

Hiya Fitgirl

It doesnt sound daft at all that you’re not emotionally prepared for your mammogram right now. I dont blame you at all for re-planning the appt for a couple of weeks time. I always have to psyche myself up for each mammogram, and personally, I feel a bit unsetttled for a week or two before it.

You are so good giving up wine for Lent - I’m going to give up chocolate. I don’t know how I’ll do it, but I’m determined to do so. So, come Easter I’ll be there toasting your good mammogram results with chocolate, and ok, I’ll not be mardy, I’ll have a glass of wine for you as well, just to keep you company on your first glass after Lent. Lol!!

Take care, and please let us know how you go on with your mammogram!

Luv xx

Hi Shelly,

Thanks for replying again and being supportive. I thought i wasn’t too bad until i noticed my half chewed lips…! I called (surgeon’s office) today and asked when i should have my mammogram - after op or dx and they said around dx. As you know from this site, we are all told different times, dates etc so i called the hospital and asked to change it as it was very short notice and i’ve asked to have it done in a couple of weeks time. I feel a bit more in control having done this.

You are very brave giving up chocolate and i know it will be hard but sure you will do it!! Chocolate and wine are my main vices  I gave up cheese last year and it was v hard as i love cheese as well - i just love food and wine!!! Anyway, fingers crossed i’ll have a good result by Easter and whilst i munch away at my Smarties Easter egg ( not into fancy eggs) i’ll raise a glass to you as well for good health and giving me a laugh:-)
Oh, and i meant to say before, it’s fab that you are 10 years free and still coming online and helping us new ladies - thanks

Take care x
