Anxiety - depression meds advice????

Hi there

Well Im not new to BC I was dx in 02 and liver mets dx in 05, but recently I just cant seem to be able to cope with things, after 3 years of hormone and chemo treatments I dont know whats changed but I cant lift myself up at the moment, my last chemo didnt work - a first for me, I just started on zoladex again after a year or so off it, and Im now on weekly taxol. Is it just a combination of all of the above?

My question is should I seek anti anxiety type drugs to get me through, its never crossed my mind to do this before, but Im sick and tired of feeling down all the time, I constantly feel on the verge of tears and dont know how to cope. I havent discussed this with anyone yet cos I know I’ll burst into tears before I can explain myself, is the onc or my GP the best person to approach, I dont really want anti depressants I want a “quick fix” not weeks of meds before they have an effect.

Any advice will be much appreciated

Thanks ladies

Sue xx

Hi Sue

Sorry to hear how low you feel. If you are depressed your GP or oncologist should be able to help you. Anxiety and depression go hand in hand with one another, so I guess your GP will want to establish whether you have short term anxiety or whether it is a symptom of depression. Modern antidepressants do work much more quickly than the old style and you could be offered counselling to go with it. Please talk to someone about it, there are many approaches that could help you feel better.

Hi Sue

Sorry I’m a bit late in the day reading your thread and hopefully your feeling better and have things sorted out now. I have suffered from anxiety and depression since my BC dx last year. My GP has put me on a lovely modern antidepressant which really has helped me deal with all this so dont be afraid to try anything. I was also given good old Diazepam for the unbearable days. It really does help with those awful despairing moments but I dont take it too often as dont want to get hooked.

Best wishes to you from Judy x
