Any bone met ladies NOT on bisphosphonates?

Hello ladies im 49 had full hysterectomy 7 yrs ago, I’m on Letrozole at he moment but only 8weeks I’ve noticed a lot of you mention these bone strengtheners but I’ve been told if I’m still on letrozole at Christmas I will have a bone density test to see if I need them, I’m a bit worried about this incase it’s a bit late by then. I’ve left a message with my onc secretary and awaiting reply. Any opinions welcome
Thanks x

Hi,desi, I think most bone mets ladies are on some sort of bisph… I was on tamoxifen & now letrozole (10weeks so far)with zolodex injections to make me menopausal ,I’m 48 and I’ve had my zometa from the start every 3 weeks( double whammy primary &mets since June 13) to counteract the effect of the mets on my bones. I think you are wise to ask your onc. why you are not having this treatment. I was under the impression it was standard treatment with bone mets but I may be wrong.
Huge hugs and good luck with onc.Helen xxxxxx

Hi Desi,

You don’t say if you actually have bone secondaries. Bisphosphonates - usually zometa or denosuma are the ones most of us are one - are always given if the bc has spread to your bones. Dexa scans (for bone density) are something completely different - they check for bone thinning - osteoporosis and that I think is what your onc is talking about.

Yes I think you are doing the right thing to ask your Onc Desi. It was standard to put us on bisphosphonates with our bone mets diagnosis but long term use can have problems too. Rare problems but anyone on any of the bisphosphonates should make sure their dentist knows before any dental work especially any teeth extractions.
Dawn or Val if you notice this do you think I should stay with Ibandronate? I have been on this bisphosphonate for years, haven’t asked about changing to the newer drug, hmm seeing Onc early April, might ask.

My onc gave me zometa every for weeks for 6 doses and then stopped. I have had no bisphosphonates since last April. Talking to others there is such a difference in thoughts depending on where you receive your treatment. Some people have had zometa for 3+ years. xx

Yes I will come back with Onc’s thoughts Tournesol and anyone else interested. See him in April. I started the olde infusion Pamidronate in 2004 and then a few years, 3-4? years later I was swapped to Ibandronate as my veins were becoming a big problem.
