any helpful tips plse 4 hand/foot syndrome with capcitabine

Hi Marilyn, How amazing is that then? I was born at a quarter to 11 at night. Do you know what time you were born at? We could just be hours apart…almost twins! only joking. Well let’s hope next year will be a better one for both of us. Love Val XX

Hi Mandy

Glad to hear your feet are feeling better. I never had severe symptoms like you when I was on Xeloda, mostly hardening and stabbing pains. I took B6 before I started treatment and used Udderly Smooth to start - really like the smell. In the end I found that emu oil worked better for me (sounds gross, I know)as it absorbed deeper into the skin and the effect lasted much longer. I felt that Udderly Smooth just seemed to sit on the top layer.

Best of luck

Ah thanks, Ripley – forgot about Emu Oil foot lotion – a bit expensive, but great texture, and might be a good solution.

Val, don’t know what time I was born, but it was in a place with a five-hour time difference to the UK, so that’s not too confusing, is it . . . btw, I’m planning as many 60th birthday parties as poss for Feb. And will be v. pleased – and a bit startled – to get my state pension . . .

Hi again ladies,

My feet are still doing fine thanks but have been on my week off Xeloda so will hold my breath when I start again next week!

Ripley-thanks for your suggestion for Emu oil- could you recommend a supplier if poss please as there seems a lot of options on the internet? It would be good to have a couple of options for the old feet as someone else suggested-many thanks

Hope everyone has has a reasonable week-end-ice to have some sunshine to emjuoy

Hi Mandy

Yes, there are loads of products on the market, many from USA which don’t have same degree of filtration as the Australians use and are not pure.

I get my emu oil from a company called natures natural beauty dot com - so just pop that in google. I’d suggest you can get one with lemon oil or lavender as the natural scent can be a bit oily/animally!

I wouldn’t bother with hand creams etc, just go straight for the pure oil - a little goes a long way and works out very cost effective - but absorbs much much better than creams and lotions. Beware if standing up on tiled bathroom floors after applying! I found that the residue on my hands did the job for me, didn’t really need to apply much there.

I also added rosehip oil to the emu oil - from a place called little green nursery, or something like that - and even the chiropidist commented that my feet were in much better condition than with Udderly Smooth.

Hope it works for you.

I recommend Johnons baby bream - nice thick and keeps your feet oft.
Also bath water not too hot.
My hands have been fine but i’ve had a few blisters on myfeet.

Moisturise twice daily when you are on the tablet. I had mine reduced from 4 x large tablet twice a day to 2 x large and 1 x small tablet twice a day over the last five months

Good luck and I hope you find something that works

Also don’t be on your feet too long at once. - I find that difficut with my work but try my best when at home

I found the cream sold for cracked heels really good - it contains a high percentage of urea which seemed to help. It was socks and gloves on creamed hands and feet in bed (v sexy for my OH!) and it really helped.

Horrible I know but much better than IV chemo… or at least I thought so!

Chin up! You/we’re all getting there

Hi All

Just caught up with this thread, as I am due to start Capcitabine(Xeloda) a week on Tuesday. Am gutted to know that my Herceptin alone is not working fully anymore after 2 years of being on it, but reading all the stories about Xeloda, am hopeful it will zap the blighters that are starting to change again.

Gonna order some cream and oil I think and be prepared!!!

Does anyone have much info on the side effects. I was told that hair loss is NOT one of them, but diarrohea is. Does anyone feel sick on this either??

Thanks very much
Dawn

Hi Dawn,
good news no hair loss mine grew stronger and did not need to be washed every day. The poos were predictable and happened after each treatment finishes but only for a couple of hours max. Sickness I took ondancetron half hour before morning and evening tablets I was on 2300 mg twice a day so a high dose I think I could have got away with domperidone but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Got tired near the end of each treatment but nothing like other chemos.
Good luck.

Hi Dawn, I haven’t had any other side effects apart from the dry hands/feet. The hospital gave me Imodium and anti nausea tablets when I started my first cycle but I haven’t had to use them. My hair is thicker and curlier. Xeloda doses can be lowered if you have too many problems and it can still be very effective at a lower dose.
Good Luck…xx

Hi Dawn,I’ve been on Capecitabine for 2 and a half years, it has kept my liver tumour stable. My hair is the best it’s been for years and I’m one of the lucky ones who doesn’t get diarrhoea. The hand/foot syndrome is a pain but lots of good advice has already been given on this thread. I do get a bit tired but not excessively, I hope you are as lucky as me.
