Any tips for shaving off hair?

A quick PS

Another positive step I took was when I realised hair loss was imminent I packed away my hardryer, straighteners, lotions and potions so I didn’t have a reminder I should be styling my hair!

Just been in the shower and only a very few stray hairs came out so I still have a covering, which I wouldn’t have had if I’d shaved. Mind you, I look like my dad when I complain he needs a haicut!! Still could lose this after second chemo but I’m happy either way. Rushing to meet colleagues for lunch and as I have kept myself late by being on this site the wig is a godsend, be ready in no time, see, there are advantages after all!!

I sat in the bath with a razor and shaved my head!! I was very lucky and got a couple of super wigs from the charity, Wig Bank, for £15 each, but to be honest with you I only wore them if I was going round the supermarket or to a new pub or restaurant, the rest of the time I went bald. It didn’t take very long to get a brown head and it was a lot cooler! After the initial look, most people just take you as normal.

Good luck

I have been doing the zizzed off look for ten days since i realised i had a HUGE chunk of hair in my fingers. I’d never realised that i fiddled with my (v short) hair before. So, bald at the sides on both sides and decided to have it taken off the next morning. i saw my lovely hairdresser, tracy, who cried as she took it off- mourning the colour she had made for me but it was the gesture of acceptance that i keep making all the way through this. Hey - when u can look at yourself and think - gosh - i cannot remember what my right breast looked like… and it was only late december when i had the op… it means that things have become normal for now. When chemo and radio is finished then i will do a new normal. This change is only temporary.

My scalp was horribly sore for a week and i don’t know for certain but i am guessing that it may be better to leave a little there rather than shaving? I found it stops hurting when it it comes out.

I have a wig via the NHS, which is stylish and convincing but i find quite warm - i wear it when i am seeing people who may have emotional issues re hair loss- like my mum, or when i want to look glam(lol i cd never do good hair and have had loads of compliments from people who do not know it is a wig). My best buy has been some scarves from surburban turban on the net - soft cotton crinkly scarves in amazing colours. And they come with instructions on how to wear the but it’s good fun making more architectural styles. they do good hats too but they are £40 -50.

This has been a really helpul thread - thanks a lot guys
