Don’t anybody shout at me- and I’m not advising anyone else to do this - but I went on holiday last year 2 months after my brain mets diagnosis (i also had liver and bone mets) and while I was on xeloda. My onc advised me against it as he felt the xeloda had stopped working and he wanted to change me to another chemo. He wasn’t happy but did finally accept that I was determined to go. So i stopped all chemo and off we went. We went on safari to Tanzania followed by a beach holiday in Zanzibar. We couldn’t get any insurance for me but we did make sure that we had money in the bank to pay for an emergency flight home if I needed it. My onc also gave me his mobile phone number if I needed to speak to him + the hospital loaded me up with supplies of antibiotics. I had never flown long haul and it felt like my last chance to do something exciting. We had the most amazing holiday ( we had to be guarded by a masai tribesman one night as a hippo had wandered up from the lake and was standing right by our tent, elephants were quite often seen wandering in to the food area to see if we had left anything interesting behind and in Zanzibar I even got to swim with dolphins!) + my tumor markers were lower when I came back than they had been for months:-). The kids still talk about it. I know that I am lucky that it didn’t turn into a disaster but I am also proud that I was brave enough to do it
I spoke to another lady with bone and liver secondaries last week who goes away every year. She plans to see as much of the world as possible (although she doesn’t have children so I suppose it’s slightly different). She tells me that last year she went to Borneo
I really want to carry on and travel a bit more. I never did before - we were always putting it off. If I have learnt nothing else from this bloody c**p disease it is that I can’t put things off - it’s now or never. I am currently looking at where we can go this year, maybe I too will try the jungles of Borneo!!
