Anybody else in Aberdeenshire?

Hi,
Is there anyone else in Aberdeenshire, either undergoing, or finished active treatment, who may wish to compare notes? It’s sometimes a lonely trail, and being on here helps, for sure.
I am near Ellon, myself.

I’m here!! Near Ellon too. DX Mar 09, WLE and ANC Apr 09, chemo and horrendous time with septicemia Jun thru end of 09, then rads finished Feb 09. Now ready to go back to work - just - and being made redundant instead - joy!

52, no kids, devoted husband, 7 cats …

Nina

Hi Nina, Very nice to hear from you,
you’re about a year ahead of me, as I was DX last April, WLE in May, Chemo and Rads to follow. Horrible that you had septicaemia, that’s all you needed! I only had 4 FECS, as my bone marrow wasn’t working up to scratch, and haemoglobin went down to 8. So, I had 2 units of blood, and advised no more chemo, which was OK with me!
What a pain to be made redundant, just when you’re ready to go back to work, or are you alright with that?
We have 3 dogs, loads of chickens,3 turkey hens, etc! One son at home, 2 live in Suffolk, and I’m a whopping 64, now… can’t believe it!
Heather.

Hi Heather and Nina, I live south of Aberdeen, and just away to start chemo. Do either of you go to CLAN at all? Dx

Hi,

I live in Aberdeen, I had a mastectomy and SNB April 2010. I did not need chemo or rads only Tamoxifen. I am off to Clan tomorrow for an aqua detox.

Jennifer

Hi Donna…how are you doing?! When do you start chemo? I have been to Clan twice, but the Inverurie meeting is my nearest. Mind you, It would be nice to go to the Aberdeen one, and get to meet you one day.
Hi Jennifer, which Clan do you go to? Aqua detox sounds very interesting!
Heather.x

Sorry, Jennifer, had a blond moment there ( even tho’ I haven’t got much hair at the moment!) if I had thought I would have realised you must go to Clan at Aberdeen?!
H.x

Hi Heather

Aqua detox uses a foot spa sort of unit and you leave your feet in for 30 minutes, this helps to detox your body. I have also had reflexology done at Clan it is so relaxing.

Jennifer x

Hi Heather, I have an appt with . Onc, next Monday so I guess I’ll be starting fairly soon. Just want to get it over with!! You should try and come in to Clan, they are a lovely bunch of people, and so helpful. xx
Jennifer, I was in Clan this morning too, for a shiatsu massage, (first one - ever) wasn’t sure if I would find it helpful, but it was so relaxing. I’m going for reflexology next week, they did suggest the aqua detox, but I wasn’t sure what it was  I’m going back in a couple of weeks for another shiatsu, all in the vain attempt to bolster my immune system before starting chemo. If nothing else its very relaxing. I’m also going to try the visualisation class on thursday, has anyone tried it before? I’m just trying anything and everything at the moment.
Hope you are all keeping well. Donnaxx

Hi Donna,

I tried visualisation a couple of times when i was having aqua detox, I could not see blue light, I was given a cd to try it at home. I think the lady that take the class is the same one that does aqua detox s you could ask about it then. I found reflexology and found it very relaxing.

enjoy yourself on thursday

Mmm, like the sound of the aqua detox, Jennifer. I said to OH today that I could get to Clan at Aberdeen almost as easily as inverurie, as the bus goes right past it! What days are they open there?
Yes, Donna, I think I would like to go and see what it’s like there. I had a shiatu massage, and it WAS very relaxing, I ought to start going again. I haven’t tried a visualisation class, in fact, I don’t think they had one locally, it’s a smaller organisation.
Yes, I expect Dr. will give you a date when you see him, at least you have something to work on then, and can tick the dates off… it all helps.
Am quite good, thanks, have been to the Dentist today and know i have to have a big filling next week, which is not a nice thought, but I am more scared of having to have false teeth if I don’t look after my own!
I’m off to ARI tomorrow, and meeting my breast care nurse for the first time! I still have a (slightly sore,) hard-ish bit on my operated on breast, and want to get her opinion on it. Anything like that is a bit of a worry when you’ve had bc, I guess we will always have a bit of a hang up about it, I will, anyway!
Take care both of you, hope to see you at Clan one day!

Hi Heather

Hope all went well at the hospital

Hi Jennifer, yes, thank you, it went well yesterday. Bc nurse was really lovely, and said she feels sure the sore lumpiness is scar tissue, phew! If I want to see her or speak to her at any time she’ll be happy to see me, and just meeting her made me feel better.
Good of you to give me the info on Clan at Aberdeen, I’m going to write it down in a minute… head like a sieve! Do you just turn up inbetween those times for coffee, like at Inverurie? I will definitely go, but I think it’ll be a couple of weeks or so before I can, as next Wednesday I am off down to Suffolk for a week visiting family and friends, and will be run ragged trying to fit everything in! Still, it will be lovely to see everyone. It’ll be strange leaving OH here, but I know he’ll be OK, living on tinned/frozen food for a while!
Hope to see you at Clan one day soon.

Hi Heather

I’m in Ellon, moved up from Edinburgh last year!

Would love to be in touch, share stories, etc.

Just joined the website today after a couple of months of reading posts but not actually getting round to doing anything.

BC diagnosed on 9/12 and have meeting with Plastic Surgeon on Tuesday re mx and recon.

Donna xx

Hi all - question for Heather! What’s at Inverurie? Is there a ‘gathering’ there or something? Just I need incentive to go over to the gym I just joined there and a get together would help!!

Nina

Hi Nina, in Inverurie( Parish Church halls, 116, North Street) there is a Drop-in facility… coffee, tea and good blether!, Mondays and Thursdays 10am- 4pm, and some therapies available on booking, which can be booked at either a coffee meeting or by phone, 07834 465602. Also Relaxation and meditation every Tuesday 3-4pm. Coffee morning itself is on the first Monday of every month 11am onwards. I have been to 2 coffee mornings and had a shiatsu massage another day, which was lovely. Very friendly people there, as I believe is the case at all Clan get togethers.
Is it the Garioch gym you’ve joined? OH was there last year for cardiac rehab, and it’s a well run place.
Heather.xx

Hi Donna, nice to “meet” you, although it’s a shame that we have to be on here! I hope all goes well for you at your meeting with the plastic surgeon on Tuesday. There’s another lovely lady from south of Aberdeen who may see your posting, and she is further ahead than you, having seen the Plastic chap and been operated on before Christmas. If she contacts you she will be able to answer some of the questions you are bound to have, which would be reassuring for you, I’m sure.
As for me, I had a lumpectomy last May, ( Op is commonly shortened to WLE… wide local excision, sorry if I’m telling you what you already know?) anyway, that was followed a few weeks later by chemotherapy, and Radiotherapy. Now I am on tablets for 5 years, and I seem to be OK on them.
Yes, I know, it’s difficult to start to post at first, I think most of us read lots of them and wonder if we should begin, but this is a great forum, Donna, you can ask whatever you want, and someone will answer. It would be lovely to share stories with you, and learn what you are doing, etc. Did you move from Edinburgh through work, or preference? How do you like Ellon? It’s not too big a place, I find, and extremely convenient for the Park and Ride! When I was going in to ARI for Radiotherapy every weekday it was in the middle of the truly awful weather, but we went on the P+Ride and I didn’t miss a single session! You can PM me if you’d prefer?
Heather.xx

Thanks Heather - if I can get the motivation I might try and make the Tuesday relaxation - I could do with some practice and it’s easier with some guidance I find! Can I just turn up do you know?

Donna - think I’m a bit like you - moved up to Ellon from Linlithgow 4 years ago - wouldn’t move back!!

Thanks Heather, lovely to “meet you” too.

I moved from Edinburgh about this time last year, my husband to be had been working up here for a while and I was made redundant so we decided to make the move, it took me 6 months to find work but managed eventually. I do like Ellon, its obviously a completely different lifestyle than living in Edinburgh, but I think I prefer it, more peaceful and much more friendly and intimate, people actually smile and say hello and there are lots of lovely walks for our puppy Charlie (who is one today!!) - the only thing I will complain about is the traffic from Ellon to Aberdeen, its a nightmare every morning getting to work.

How far are you from Ellon? I also had a few appointments at ARI during the bad weather, we drove down in the car though, the worst part was trying to move in the car park at the ARI and not get stuck, it was so icy.

How do you feel now that you have been through your treatment?

Sorry I’m not sure how to “PM you”??

Donna xx

Yes, I think you just turn up for the relaxation classes, Nina, It doesn’t say to book them. I know what you mean about getting the motivation, I am the same. I mean to do something, then realise another date has gone by and I haven’t done it!
I MUST remember I am serving coffee and tea (at the coffee hour we have in Tarves) this coming Tuesday, at least OH comes to that too, so will make sure I do, AND I’ve remembered to get the biscuits! Wednesday I am off on the train to Suffolk for a week, OH will be looking after the dogs, hens, etc, bless him! Do us both good, as we’ve been in each others’ pockets a long time with Hospital visits, etc, plus he’ll get to remember just how much he likes my cooking!
