Anyone form Bellshill/North Lanarkshire Area

Morning all - I am going to meet with the plastic surgeon in 2 hours to discuss possible immediate recon - I have DCIS/IDC and ILC in my right breast. Don’t know what is best - I was diagnosed 29/9/09 and feel I am sitting about waiting for something to happen and still haven’t decided if I want the recon or not - onc advised don’t know if I will need chemo/radio until after the mastectomy. To top it all off I am loaded with the cold so just feel like going back to bed (lol) don’t know how much info I am going to take in today. Know it sounds petty after reading some of the posts on this site but is it just another thing to deal with. Feeling very fed up this morning.

Hugs to all!

Hi fortysomething, I stay in Airdrie, so not too far from you. Don’t know if it is Mr MacKay at his clinic today in Wishaw you are off to see. He is excellent at what he does and will be open and honest with you to what feels would be the best road for you but ultimately it will be your decision. Sorry I can’t help with your other questions, but this will put you back to the top.
Hope someone will be able to give you more answers. Will look out for your posts to see how things are going with you.

Irene

Hello ladies

Thanks for your messages - I have decided to go for the mastectomy and perhaps have the recon later. Mr Mackay was really good and explained everything clearly I was also lucky enough to be able to speak to Mr Cannon so my surgery is booked for Thursday 29/10/09 giving me a bit of time to get organised - I will only be in hospital for approx 5 days. Relieved the decision has been made and things are now moving forward, but also scared at what may happen post surgery (the fear of the unknown!)

Thanks again

Jean xx

Hi fortysomething, wouldn’t have said anything yesterday until you had made a decision but I think you have made the right one. Personally I think the mastectomy alone is enough to get your head round but as I say it is everyone’s right to choose.
Don’t worry too much as you will be well looked after by all the staff in Wishaw and remember Jayne and Margaret (BCN) are at the end of the phone. My consultant was Mrs Lannigan who was a star. Can’t talk highly enough about her.
Waiting is the worst part, but keep posting on here so as we know how you are.

Carmcg - Hi there nice to meet you.

Irene (fiftysomething)

hi ladies,
i am under mrs lannigan and dr singh also i think they are wonderful, mrs lannigan is really easy to get on with and talk to as is dr singh.
i was first under mr campbell and dr sinh 18yrs ago when i had my first surgery in stonehouse hospital then i followed them to the law and now to wishaw.
i had a immediate removal and reconstruction in the royal in 2007 performed by mr mckay and his australian registrar, i think her name was nikki but she is away back to australia now, she was so lovely and the both of them made me feel very comfortable.
sometimes i wish i had waited to decide wether i wanted a recon or not, personally i don’t think they are that great, sometimes it is uncomfortable, but i have done it now.
everyone has a decision to make but it is a hard one, you are in so much shock. i had 16yrs between the 1st and 2nd time so my head was in turmoil, mabe i feel that way because i had already had surgery to that breast so it wasn’t s tidy as it would have been if it had been my 1st, if you know what i mean.
anyway jean good luck with the surgery and i thought wishaw was a good hospital to be in the staff were all very friendly and you get a good gab with the other patients.
good thoughts to everyone

Hi Fortysomthing, putting this back to the top in the hope you are home and doing ok. Please if you feel up to it let us know how you are.

Irene

Still looking out for you fortysomething.

Hi all - well what an experience that was! Thanks for your messages, just out of hospital Friday 13/11/09. Ended up being in for 16 days! I had it all, blood transfusion, horrible aggressive infection. wound that won’t stop leaking … district Nurse still coming in every day to check the wound, etc. but on the road to recovery now. I cannot put into words how wonderful the staff of Ward 17 Wishaw General are - they are all magnificent. Anyway, got results today so now getting ready for next step in this chapter of my life - 7 nodes tested, 6 were negative so need bone scan and ct scan then chemo and rads. but Mr Cannon and Mr Singh very positive. After all I have been through in hospital all I can say is ‘bring it on’ I am more positive and more determined now to fight this disease!!

hi fortysomething,
hope your infection has cleared up at least a bit, the one i was left with after having an uplift on my good side took 7mnths to heal and i have been left with a big square scar, but your right ward 17 was a good ward.

Hi all

Just thought I would take this chance to wish everyone a happy, healthy christmas. I am just recovering from my first bout of chemo next one on 29th so should be able to get through christmas and new year without too much trouble. One of my lovely sisters-in-law is cooking xmas dinner and all I have to do is turn up - how lucky am I.

Another bit of good news is that I am going to be a granny in June -so excited, another good reason to fight and stay positive.

Love and best wishes to all

Jean
