I had a lumpectomy 11 days ago and all was going swimmingly on the healing front until yesterday. In the shower my boob swelled to double in size within 20 mins! I went to see the BC nurse who says its a haematoma (probs spelt wrong) and as they couldn’t drain it i will probably need to have it removed under general on thursday.
I feel cross and quite frankly a freak as one breast is now a generous c cup while my other one is the normal tiny a.
Has anyone else had this?
Hi Louise,
I had one come up slowly over the 6 weeks after surgery and before rads. When I saw my onc, I had a ct scan and he saw a heamatoma. I had radiotherapy and didn’t have it drained. My bood is hard after rads but I hope that it will resolve over time.
It must be really scary but just listen to those professionals around you and take their advice, as you have gone along with them all ready! Life is just full of decisions that you could really do without, isn’t it?!
Good luck on Thursday.

Yes, i also had a haematoma. Mine happened the same day i had my WLE, my boob swelled up to twice the size ( I am only B cup) and the pressure it put on my chest was very scary. I ended up going back to theatre later that day to have it sorted out as mine burst open my stiches eventually.
All is fine with it now, but it has left me with a slightly darker purple area on my boob - think its from the pressure put on the blood vessels in it… As Jo says above, listen to the professionals and they will soon have you right.
Good luck for Thursday… let us know how you get on

Hi
Yes I had a haematoma. Had bilateral mastectomies followed by immediate reconstruction with silicone implants May 2005. However, within a few days of being discharged felt very unwell, bleeding from nipples, temperature, vomiting, couldn’t breathe, felt as if someone was pushing up again chest wall. It turned out that I had a massive infection alongside a haematoma. Breasts were large and swollen, which they are a bit anyway after surgery, but they were really huge. Had two or three days on IV antibiotics, but didn’t shift the infection, so had to be taken down to theatre and have them removed where they found not only the infection, but a large haematoma as well. Lost a patch of skin at the time about the size of 50p piece, but this gradually healed, and had inflaters put in after a few months and these were gradually built up. Took about 6 months to get another set of permanent implants put back in after everything healed. I didn’t have any problems with my initial lumpectomy a month or so earlier though.
Hi Louise ,
Me too. went to get it checked out at the breast clinic and as the nurse pulled very gently on the steri-strip to remove it the wound gaped open for about 2 centimetres and lots of nasty, black slithery clots of old blood came spilling out…the relief was great (and so was the mess!).
It took quite a few weeks to heal back up again…still feels lumpy in places 8 months later.
Hope you are getting on ok,
Kay x
When I had my so called benign lump out I awoke to find I was in a lot of pain and the surgeon came round to say I’d got a haematoma. I was glued up and the wound started to come open, it didn’t heal properly and three weeks later I was told I had breast cancer. Within two weeks I had my second operation and one week after that I was back in hospital with a wound infection, seven lots of IV antibiotics a day through ever more collapsing veins, followed by a hole being made in the side of my breast which was packed with gel tape for about a month, all after my surgeon said to me, ‘I can improve your scar’ - he was too feeble to tell me straight out that I’d got breast cancer as I’d been misdiagnosed for 6 months
not that I’m bitter, just slightly twisted

I just have a question you ladies may be able to help with please.
I had a minor op on my breast at the beginning of June, ducts were being removed but it wasn’t considered cancerous before the op. However, cancer was found and I have now a small scar on the side of my nipple where they tried to laser it up.
I’ve been having chemo, herceptin and am expecting a mastectomy around the end of chemo.
My question is, since 6 weeks ago I’ve had an awful aching in my ribs. It feels like a brick and is uncomfortable more than painful. I’ve had a bone scan, xrays and ultrasound which hasn’t shown anything nasty, just a haematoma. However, I find it hard to believe that a tiny scar could cause such a discomfort in my ribs. Any advice please?
