Anyone had LD or DIEP recon after radiotherapy?

DCIS has returned after 4 years to a breast which had 3 weeks of rads. Has anyone had an immediate recon in similar circumstances? Would love to hear from you. I have to make a decision really soon.

Hi Cassie,

I’m trying to find out the same thing… had one breast blasted 9 years ago… and just finished rads to othet breast last week… has your consultant suggested this to you? Sorry for being nosey…

I had a skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate LD reconstruction 15 months after 5 weeks of rads. No problems. It can be done! Let me know if you want/need any more info?

I’ve been offered a mastectomy with immediate recon and PS has said I can have either an LD or DIEP recon. If I have the LD I’ll need an implant which he says will need replacing about every 10 years or possibly less. He’s also said about having problems with it go hard which is apparently more likely if you have had radiotherapy. At the moment I’m thinking of the DIEP one. I know it’s longer surgery but once it is done I will not have to think about surgery further down the line. I’m seeing my consultant again tomorrow and a lady who has had a DIEP flap done by the same PS is seeing me with the breast care nurse. I’m seeing the PS again next week and am booked for an op on 1 September. I need to decide by the end of next week. A big decision and any help would be welcomed. The whole thing is very scary.
