I am due to start chemo this Weds so in preparation I had a tooth taken out (4 weeks ago) that had originally caused me a few problems with infection. I was wondering if this is going to cause me any further problems as the site is still healing and is a little tender (I try not to eat on that side). I went to the dentist last week and he confirmed it is still a little inflammed but not infected. My onc says it is ok. Just wondered if anyone has had any issues with teeth.
Sorry if I sound like a wimp but I am paranoid as going into chemo for the first time and VERY nervous!!
My teeth are a little sensitive at the moment, but I’m not sure if that’s due to the chemo or not. It hurts quite a lot to drink very cold stuff. But consult your Breast Cancer Nurse who can probably help with this.
Hi Andrea,
I broke a tooth whilst having chemo, onc., told me if it needed to come out i would have to have it done there not dentist’s…fortunately it didn’t need to come out, but I would do as Cecelia said and consult your BCN.
Hope chemo goes ok.
I am sure the BC nurse will be able to help I know they say good oral hygiene is paramount during chemo so they will of encountered this before, try and not worry. Good luck for Wed, you will be fine. Have a good rest tomorrow and remember the first will be the worst because of nerves but it is doable, it WILL make you better.
If you would like to chat this over with one of our helpliners who include specialist nurses prior to your appointment on Wednesday, please feel free to contact us on 0808 800 6000, the line is open 9am-5pm Mon to Fri and 9am-2pm Sat.
Well done for you being proactive about the bad tooth in advance - anything that can reduce the likelihood of problems during chemo is a good thing. The chemo nurse can talk you through dealing with any further problems - usually if you have trouble with your mouth they’ll give you mouthwash and if needed, a course of antibiotics.
It is nerve wracking going for first chemo - I kept a stiff upper lip right till I got into the chemo suite and then burst into tears. The fight or flight instinct was raging! Once it starts, you’ll manage, the thinking about it is the worst of all. And after Wednesday you’ll be able to say “one down!”
Good luck
Sarah

I was given the leaflet about “Care of your Mouth” during the first chemo and it said to have any dental treatment to starting chemo… a bit late, given that they were literally injecting the Epi at the time! I’ve put off my routine check-up, but my teeth have been a bit sensitive, especially to cold water when brushing them…
