Anyone had their periods return after 5 years of Tamoxifen?

Hi

I was wondering if anyone had heard of periods returning after having nothing while taking Tamoxifen.

I came off Tamox. 3 months ago after almost 5 years. My onc was quite certain I’m post menopausal as my periods stopped during chemo and not had one since also my FSH and LH results indicated post meno. I was switched to Femara but last week had what seemed to be a heavy period.
Onc has told me to stop taking the Femara and I’m now waiting for a pelvic ultrasound.

I know it could be a problem caused by 5 years of Tamoxifen but as I’m 48 I suppose it’s possible I am after all still peri-menopausal.

Your thoughts or experience of this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kim

Hi kim,

I have heard before that periods can return after stopping tamoxifen and that this isn’t unusual. I think it even says it on the slip of paper that’s mine. I know I’ve read it somewhere. I’ve not had any since I started chemo last April and I’m hoping they don’t come back… Just shows mind you how well Tamoxifen works. Sorry I can’t help further.

Best wishes

Hi Fiona

Thanks for your reply. I now have a pelvic ultrasound appointment for February so will see what that throws up. I don’t want periods back but then again I don’t want any problems from the Tamoxifen either.

Thanks again,
Good luck and Best wishes

Hi

I have had a similar experience. Five years on Tamoxifen with three periods during this time. In may this year blood results indicated post men, switched to letrozole/femara. Tested again august Post men. Had a light bleed two weeks ago. Made an oncology appointment and was retested, results show pre menopausal. Im not overly suprised as i have stopped flushing and am sleeping ok again, and am being told how well i look… Was told to stop femara and just to check all is well am having a pelvic scan and gynaecology appointment.
Have been told that this sometimes just happens.

Hope that this helps.

As i always stress, we are all different and must get things checked. It’s sometimes reassuring though that you aren’t the only one. It took me a while to find any relative info on this or anyone who had experienced similar.
