anyone having or had rads at velindre Cardiff

Hello, I am about to start radiotherapy and could go to Velindre in Cardiff or alternitavley to Cheltenham. I would preer velindre because its closer, but am willing to travel to Cheltenham if quality of treatment is superior. Anyone got any views on this ???

cheers

Lou

Hi, I had my rads in Swansea’s Singleton and found it a great place. Is’nt Velindre the main cancer hospital in the area?I’ve heard nothing but praise for it I’d have my rads there if I were you.And remember it can be very tireing and stressful having to travel long distances for your radiotheraphy!

Regards Josie

Hi, I had 34 (I think) rads at Velindre and have nothing but praise for them.

From the ladies on reception through to the radiologists everyone was great!

I had about 50 mins (traffic permitting) to and from the Hospital and it is tiring even though I was driven thankfully by family and friends and I found the tiredness accumulative and towards the end of treatment I couldn’t stay awake in the afternoons. Once treatment finished it passed quite quickly.

hi

thanks for very helpful and reassuring comments. Oh blimey, I hope I don’t get too tired…Did you have rads every other day or otherwise???. I think I’m having it to collarbone area only, but my onc is expaining everything next time I see him. Really pleased to hear such good reports as I was not at all keen to travel to Cheltenham from here on the welsh border. It would have been a real fag. I think its going to take me about 1 hr 15 mins from here. Do you think I should arrange for someone to come with me or not???. Will they arrange an appointment time to suit me so that I can miss traffic???

It depends on the individual. I had 6mths of chemo first and still sailed through radiotheraphy. I drove myself the to and from the hospital which took about an hour each way(I went every day with weekends off) But my friend who had similar treatment found she was too tired and had to get family to take her!..Good luck Lou.

I too had had eight rounds of fec before my radiotherapy.

I was glad to have the help of family and friends to drive me back and fore. I think in the beginning I would have been fine to drive but the last two weeks of rads., the drive home would have been a strain as I was so tired.

I did have treatment most days but I had two Bank holidays in my treatment, may day and spring bank holiday. I also had a couple of days when the machine was being serviced. I’m sure they will be as accommodating as they can be regarding appointment times.

I liked having someone with me for company.

Louchris and everyone,

Hi, this isnt related to the question, but Im going to relocate to Cardiff from London, ( family in Cowbridge and LLantrisant) how are you finding the BC services in South Glam?

good luck with your treatment plans, and most of all recovery!

Hi Lou,
My mum had chemo and rads in Velindre and she said everyone was amazing. We live in Cardiff so it wasn’t far for her to travel. It’s a cancer centre of excellence (I think that’s right). My mum arranged early morning appointments so my dad could take her on the way to work. Sometimes she had to wait but generally the appointments were fairly quick. I went with her to chemo a couple of times and the nurses were lovely.
Hope this helps,

hello all!

Thanks for all the helpful advice on radio and tiredness etc…

Julie, I’m afraid I can’t help you on the service in S. Galm as I have had all the rest of my treatment in Hereford. We’re on the Welsh border so I can go either way. I’m going to velindre for rads as my other option is Cheltenham which is further away for me.

I did talk to a lady who was treated in S. Glam from here the other day and she said the treatment she received was excellent, but that is second hand info.

sorry can’t be more helpful

Loux
