Anyone know where I can buy a prosethetic

Hi,

I had a mastectomy in January and was told that I would be given a prosthesis, however this hasn’t happened. I saw a surgeon about 2 weeks after the op and thought that it would be sorted out then, but he didn’t mention it. It was the first time I had seen a male doctor which rather threw me, and I didn’t like to mention it. I have had subsequent appointments with the oncologist and radiotherapy doctor, but I know that it’s not their remit so again I didn’t say anything. I am rather relieved that I now don’t have a hospital appointment till June (aside from the herceptin injections) and am therefore unwilling to contact the hospital to ask about it - not least because in the past when what they have promised has not transpired they appear to blame me for it e.g. my surgery was delayed because they were supposed to organise an MRI scan which they failed to do, but then subsequently claimed that I had missed the appointment. I hadn’t, but I live alone and the extreme fatigue caused by the chemo meant that I didn’t chase it up. I live in London so was wondering if anyone knew of a shop where I could go to be fitted with a prosthesis. In general, because I am small breasted I don’t mind, but I am going to see my family and am worried that they will notice.

Hi SusieQ2

I had a mastectomy in August and I had my appt to receive my prosthesis in October.  This was a very quick appointment at the hospial prosthesis clinic with a lady who got me try on a couple of different sizes and both of us decided which looked best.  It was very helpful having her advice.

I would advise that you contact your breast care nurse and ask about the appointment as the prosthesis are not cheap and without trying you make pick the wrong size and type as there are several.

I was given an amoena natura light prosthesis which for me, works very well.  They do have their own website.

I hope this was helpful and please don’t worry about what people think I am sure you look just fine!

Hi SuzieQ2 You are welcome Hope you are sorted & more comfortable soon Sorry for shortness of post earlier Hubby was chasing me up to get ready to go out xxx

I had my mastectomy in August and it took me til november to get mine - I ended up speaking to the BCN and telling them I had only got the “softie” which I was given the day of my op, so they got me booked in to see the prosthetic dept. at the cancer unit - would be worth telling them.
