Anyone near Leicester?

Hi ladies,

I have been recently diagnosed with high grade primary BC and due for Wide Excision and Sentinal node biopsy/ node sampling on Friday 27th August.

Leaflet from hospital suggests front opening sports bra for after surgery but none available locally - can you recommend any online? Have bought two v.soft feeding bras as stopgap but not front opening.

How soon after the operation will I need them? Won’t there just be loads of dressings and drains initially?

Also how soon after the op were you able to walk about?

One of my favourite hobbies is dancing - ballrom, latin, old time, anything really. Are you a dancer and if so how long did it take you before you could do this comfortably again? I have just bought two new pairs of dance shoes!

Hi Dancingfeet,

I had a mastectomy in Glenfield in Mar 07. So not quite your operation. At the time everyone who was in the same time as me didn’t bother with wearing bras for several days, not until we were fitted for our ‘comfies’ by the nurses (a very soft prosthesis for straight after surgery) in preparation for going home.

I had two drains in initially - one for the mastectomy site, and one for the node clearance I think.

I was certainly on my feet the day after surgery - don’t think I was on the surgery day (which had been after lunch, and I didn’t get back to the ward till late afternoon).

Don’t know anything about dancing, but I was running three weeks after surgery. I guess dancing is a bit harder as you will be twising & turning, and you have a partner who you will need to be able to keep up with.

I will be in the Royal this Friday for implants - following an LD flap recon last Feb.

Hope your op goes well. I assume you will be on ward 23a in Glenfield? they will look after you well there.

Had a mastecomy in May 2007 - I was wobbly on my feet for the first day as I had low blood pressure - but I suffer from low blood pressure anyway. Other than that, no problems - a few of us regulary walked with our drains in our little handbags to the cafe for a coffee!! I was out of the ward in five days - depends on your drains.

I bought a bra from M&S which helped with the softie. I was swimming after my check up after the op and started playing hockey again in September.

If you are interested there is a group of ladies that get together at Breast of Friends at Helen Webb House, Leicester. We meet every third Monday of the month at 6.30pm. Helen Web also do a lot of complimentary therapies, counselling, yoga etc. I found them excellent and supportive.

Hope all goes well - they will look after you well at Glenfield.
