Hi, it’s nearly two weeks after I had my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. I’ve mostly lounged on the sofa and have been quite happy not thinking about it, catching up with an old friend. I’m rather surprised that I’ve still not got much appetite as the anaesthetic is well out my system. I started to get hungry again by the end of the first week but just don’t really fancy eating. Yesterday I pushed myself to eat more but it was an effort and it’s not made me want to eat anymore today! I’m also pretty sure things don’t taste that strong - had my favourite home made garlic mayo with homemade garlic wedges last night but they just seemed boring. just wondered if anyone else had experienced this after an op, for cancer or anything else?
Would you normaly be ‘lounging on the sofa mostly’? I find my appetite adapts to how active I am, so if I don’t do much,I don’t eat much. Can’t explain the change in taste, an emotional stress response perhaps? I also eat less when stressed. You might get your appetite back after exercise, though its understandable if you don’t feel like it.
I find my appetite varies based on a few different factors; how well I’m feeling, how much exercise I’m doing, my emotional state and even sometimes the weather!
My advice is to just not worry about it - eat what you fancy when you fancy it and don’t try to force yourself to eat if you’re not feeling it. You have been through a lot both physically and emotionally and it might take a bit of time to find your balance again. In the meantime, do things you enjoy and if possible get out for a bit of fresh air and exercise every day, even if it’s just a short walk round the garden.
Take care.
