I was here in february after noticing my nipple had inverted then finding a lump. I went to see the breast surgeon who scanned me and did a FNA of a lumpy area about 2 inches away as she didn’t find the lump I could feel, I came on my period just before going to the hospital so my breasts were a bit bigger than usual. Anyway after my period I couldn’t feel the lump anymore but my nipple was still inverted so I just waited until I went back for the 6 week check up.
I went back last wednesday to see her again, she said the FNA was fine and did another ultrasound, and said it was clear. Fair enough, I was pleased about that and thought that was the end of it all.
Yesterday (saturday) I had an itch went to scratch it and there is the lump again!!!(just like me to get the symptoms back after being discharged back to my GP!) I couldn’t believe it, I think it’s even a tiny bit bigger and definitely firmer than before and my nipple is even more inverted! I’ve been doing some reading and have found out about fibroscystic changes and think this could be the case so I’m tempted to leave it a few months and see if it disappears again after my period. But what I’ve read says alot about there being pain with fibrocystic changes and I haven’t had any pain, just wondering what other peoples experiences were of this?
I think it reassuring that the scan was clear. But if your still feeling a lump and your nipple is more inverted then I would go back to GP and ask if you could have MRI scan.My nipple was starting to become inverted and I also kept getting an itch where the lump was,but mine did show on ultrasound.
hello there
sorry I’ve not experienced symptoms like yours, but I agree with Mel that its worth seeing your GP again if you still notice symptoms - you need to have your peace of mind
best wishes to you

I feel like I’m starting all over again, just a few days after thinking it was all over!
I’ve really got to stop looking things up on the net, apparently cysts usually feel like they have some give to them, which this doesn’t, also apparently fibroadenomas and cysts are moveable, which this isn’t. But I don’t think anything cancerous would just disappear for a few weeks, so I’ll just wait and see how it feels after my next period. *sigh*
I don’t really want to go back to my GP again, I always seem to be in there and although there is always something wrong and I am right to go, I’m sure they must think I’m a hypochondriac! But if the lump stays then I will go back.
Cat - agree with other ladies, best to go back to GP. If not, you could always look into a private consultation - they sometimes do mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy same day with quick results. I dont know how much these cost…
Not to worry you, but I also started with an itch, so please get it checked again.
M
well I waited a whole cycle just to be sure this lump isn’t cyclical - it’s not. I’ve felt it every day for the last month. I know now why I couldn’t feel it before and that is because I was lying down. It totally disappears when I lie down, but when I sit up it is very palpable.
I was checking the nipple the other night and I noticed it glistening slightly, so I had a poke and a tiny amount of clear fluid came out, followed by a tiny amount of blood stained fluid. the amount was so tiny but I’m still worried although it wasn’t really spontaneous, so that is good. I’ve had nothing since either, even when giving it a squeeze.
Got the doctors on thursday morning, I’m hoping she’ll give me a referral to a different hospital, I can’t just take the last doctors diagnosis of ‘it just happens sometimes’. Even if it is something benign I still want to know exactly what it is.
Ugh, sorry for the rant, I just want this dealt with!
You are doing the right thing, and insist next time trhat you are given a thorough triple assessment. I was messed around this time, and had it not been for my friend, gob on legs, I would have accepted the first diagnosis…which was wrong btw!! My biopsy came back B3, which meant the lump had to come out for further analysis, cannot rule out bc, 25% chance that it is…the first cons said no way was it bc just from a quick examination. Needless to say a complaint has gone into PALS!
Glad you’re getting things sorted, can I borrow your friend for my appointment!!! I don’t blame you for complaining, I came very close when they said I was too young to have BC and pretty much dismissed me from there, but I didn’t because I didn’t tell them about the lump like I should have, I thought it had disappeared. Anyway, I hope it turns out to be benign for you.
Well now it hurts. When I bend over or it gets squished I get a burning pain in my nipple. Great. Although most places seem to think that that is a good sign, it still isn’t very nice I wonder if Maybe I’ve prodded and poked too much and given myself an infection or something? so now my symptoms altogether are: lump behind nipple, retracted nipple, itching, burning pain and tiny amounts of discharge. I just hope my GP will re refer me on thursday as it’s all starting to get to me now
Well I didn’t get another referral. Apparently there is nothing there and it would have shown on the ultrasound if there was. This is despite there being obvious symptoms. It’s as if the Dr’s only care about if it’s cancer or not and if it’s not they don’t care what it is. The fact is that my nipple is itchy and inverted which is embarrasing and I want it sorted. The discharge and pain - which have now subsided - and the lump is apparently unimportant.
I just feel really let down now. I wish I could afford to go private, but it’s just not possible.
Thanks for the support anyway everyone, You’ve all been great through this.
Please phone up the unit that you went to and ask to speak to the bcn… they should have told you to go back if symptoms changed, got worse etc… If that doesn’t work get in contact with PALS at your unit - they deal with patient liason… (just ask for them on the main switchboard…) At the end of the day this is your health you are concerned about and if something does go wrong your gp will just shrug their shoulders and say “Who would have known…” Also - if you havn’t already phone the helpline on here and go through your symptoms with one of the helpline nurses…
Take care and please do phone the unit and tell them any changed symptoms…
Please do ring the helpline if you are still concerned. They can offer support and information about your symptoms and you can talk through your feelings with them.
