Back from my op

Back from my op

Back from my op Hello

I’ve had my lumpectomy (2 lumps removed, one from lymph node) and it all went really well. I’m now just feeling paranoid about the results and what they are going to tell me (worrying about how many lymph nodes it has spread to, just the one I am hoping). Does the paranoia/worry every stop all the time, I don’t suppose it does.

The op was surprisingly ok, arm a bit stiff and it does really hurt if I do something silly like reach down at a funny angle but apart from that I feel fine. I’ve still got a lovely drain attached to me, am debating how to conceal it if I have to go out of the house.

I guess the first part of this all is over and now the hard part begins (chemo). Have already been thinking about wigs as convinced I will probably lose my hair, although there is a cold cap you can wear that prevents this - has anyone tried this??

Anyway I’m rambling away here. Hope everyone is doing ok.

Hello Jude. Glad to hear that your surgery went well. Good luck with the results. When do you get them? Most people on this board say that they felt better once they had actually got the results and started treatment. I certainly did even though I was dreading the chemo but I felt as if I was doing something positive once chemo started. The chemo isn’t nice but it is doable.

Have you been given exercises for your arm? I had my surgery last December (lumpectomy and full axillary clearance) and am still doing my exercises every day.

Definitely use the cold cap if you have chemo. I tried it and unfortunately it didn’t work for me and I still lost my hair, but it works really well for loads of women. I know several women who are using the cold cap and their hair has thinned out but they have kept enough hair not to need a wig.

Very best of luck.

glad you are doing well-make sure you dont do too much!l didnt try cold cap but ohers have had good results. At least you are on the way now.take care love sharonx

Think I will definitely try the cold cap, it’s got to be worth a go. I have got arm exercises to do - does the numbness wear off? My arm is hurting much more today but I think it is to do with the nerve endings coming back or something?

Hopefully I get the results on Tuesday, am just waiting for a letter confirming it from the hospital. I really hate the waiting!

keep taking the painkillers for a while longer perhaps, i was in for 6 days and took them for a while after, slowly working down on dose, never had any pain.
i had op in nov 2005 and am still numb, think it may stay with you.
i was told no to the cold cap as the hospital felt that if the chemo did not reach the scalp there was a tiny tiny chance cancer could get there so i didn’t have it.
can i suggest you use aloe vera or oil on scar as soon as you are able, when it has healed as this will prepare your skin ready for if you are having rads.
good luck on your journey.
