Bad reaction chemo

Morning

I am after some reassurance to be honest yesterday was my first chemo session. All was going well cold cap and the foot/hands packs on. Husband had gone for a brew so when the nurse ask if I was ready thought yes and he would be happy I had started. Unfortunately 2min into it as husband walked back in I blacked out, husband said emergency buzzers were pressed and a response team of drs ect arrived and the nursing staff on the unit were around me immediately it took a while after some drugs and finally adrenaline to get me to come round. Apparently my blood pressure went down to 45/50. I was transferred to the main hospital and put under obs after a xray and bloods sent home. Has this happened to anyone else?? They are washing my chemo going forward to make it less harsh. Would love to hear some positive stories as scared stiff now x

Hey @titch1

I’m so sorry to hear this happened. It sounds like the team acted very quickly and it’s good your husband was able to fill you in on what happened when you came round.

I’ve no experience of this I’m afraid, but just wanted to give you a virtual handhold while you’re waiting for more useful replies because I do know how it feels to be scared stiff about what will happen the next time you receive treatment.

All the best. x

@mssteel thank you xxxxx

I had something similar happen at my first chemo session. I didn’t black out, but I had a racing heart and went very giddy. It was very scary.

They tried reducing the dose and giving it more slowly, but I still had a reaction, albeit a milder one. After this I was very reluctant to try again. After a conversation with my oncologist I was switched to a different chemo drug. This was fine, and a I had no side effects.

At the time I spoke to others on here. Those that had the same extreme first reaction managed fine with the second reduced dosage. I think I was the only one at the time who had reacted to the reduced dose.

@scientistamafier thank you for this really helpful xxx hope your chemo is going ok now I’ve left a message for my BCN to ring me I need a clearly plan of what’s happening xx

Hello titch1,

Thanks for getting in touch. It sounds as if you had a stressful experience with your first dose of chemotherapy and, as @msstell says, it’s understandable you’re now scared stiff about the next treatment cycle.

As you say, the treatment team will alter the next dose of chemotherapy and monitor you very carefully. As @scientistamafier says, they may swap to a different type if the current chemotherapy isn’t suiting you.

It’s important to talk through your concerns with your breast care nurse, chemotherapy staff or oncologist before your next treatment so you can discuss your worries. You could ask if your husband could stay with you when you get your next dose of treatment, until you feel less anxious.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. They can share their personal experiences, offer support and listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Some people benefit from talking therapy, such as counselling, to explore ways of managing these worries and concerns. You could speak to your breast care nurse or GP if you think this would be helpful for you.
