BEST FOOT FORWARD!

Hi all,

Extensive research has shown that exercise is becoming increasing important in terms of recovery and living well after cancer. Using some of the income from the London Marathon sponsorship BCC is looking to enhance the Moving Forward courses it delivers to encourage the benefits of physical activity after treatment. We are also developing local walking groups which provide a ‘stepping stone’ to gentle regular activity in a supportive environment.

Best Foot Forward walking groups will be piloted in the northern region and will be open to anyone who has had a diagnosis of Breast Cancer in three locations (Manchester, Calderdale and Barnsley). The weekly walks will consist of a 30-minute circular route finishing at a café or other social place for a drink and chat.

If you are interested in participating in the Best Foot Forward walking groups and wish to be sent details once your local walking group is established, please email bestfootforward@breastcancercare.org.uk with your name, contact details and walk location.

Breast Cancer Care is also recruiting for volunteers who are willing to donate some of their time to facilitate these walks. Anyone interested in becoming a walk leader please contact Lisa Holland (Volunteer Manager) on 0845 077 1893. Volunteers will find this role very satisfying and rewarding, but you need to be sure that you are physically and emotionally ready to support others. This is why we ask that you are at least 18 months post your diagnosis before applying.

Hi,
Will there be, or is there anything in the east of England. Services seem a bit light on the ground here.
Thanks,
Rachael

yahoo barnsley! i will be there, thankyou so much BCC. i also have a moving forward course in barnsley to attend as well which i am hoping is going to help me. thankyou BCC xxx

I second what Rachael says re the East of England. Here in rural Norfolk we have plenty of safe walking routes but very little in the way of services such as your Moving Forward courses. In fact, in some ways it is more important to provide your services to rural locations as there is usually far more choice and activities available to city dwellers than to us more geographically rural folk.

Our boots were made for walking so please give us the opportunity to put them on for you!

Not much going on in the South either, will they be expanding it soon down here?

i think the moving forward is new for barnsley, dont think there was one before. but there wasnt anything either near to travel to ie leeds or sheffield areas either. my 2 breast care nurses are the ones running it though. maybe it was them wanting to get one going.

Hi TTM
Will you PM me the details also please.

Thanks

Heather

Thanks I would appreciate that.

Sounds great - just wish there was one in Scotland… did an excerise class after my surgery which really got me going again, and am a really keen walker. Will keep a look out if anything start up here… stroll and coffee sounds like my kinda thing!

Will there be any such orgsnisation in N Ireland? I think its a great idea and know it would get a positive response and a lot of support!!!

I fancy nordic walking… i might look in to doing that…
There must be something locally!

Hi all

Here is a link which contains details of the moving forward events and where and when they are being held :-

Again, nothing in East Anglia…the nearest place is London which is an hour by train.

I am amazed at how badly served this area is. Even Look Good Feel Better has stopped running courses at Addenbrookes!

Makes me very disappointed at the lack of facilities for us in this part of the country.
