But went to surgeons 6 monthly appt today…he was not there, in fact no Drs there, but saw nurse practioner, and shes concerned, althougth i had pointed it out to her, how different my affected boob is, rather larger, hotter, discoloured, and she felt a vein running along the top…tumour was at 5 oclock…

Thanks,

Jill

HI Jill

Did you have radiotherapy? It is not unusual to develop swelling in the breast afterwards, and for this swelling to last for up to a couple of years after the end of treatment, discolouration can also be a part of the radiotherapy. Hotter is something different, and hopefully the nurse excluded any infection. You are clearly worried, especially as the nurse was concerned, so I am assuming that she has made another appointment so that you can see a doctor and that you aren’t expceted to go away and worry for another six months? You need peace of mind above all things. (I used to be a nurse in a lymphoedema clinic and we were referred quite a lot of ladies who had developed oedema of the breast. We would teach them simple lymph drainage massage of the breast which seemed to help - perhaps you could ask for a referral once any other cause has been excluded). Please let us know… Good luck. Sarah

Hi Jill,
I had similar dx to you in 2003. 2 cm tumour plus DCIS, ER+, although HER2-. I had FEC, then 25 rads. About two years ago I developed a long ropey lump in the malignant breast, from the top of the breast almost to the nipple. Tumour was below the aueole and non palpable. I got an urgent appt with my bc surgeon and he diagnosed Mondor’s disease, a superficial thrombophlebitis of a vein. It has no connection with bc. He is a very experienced bc surgeon and said he had never seen Mondor’s in a bc patient, but had otherwise. It is quite rare so he asked if I would let the radiographers on duty come into the consulting room for a “look and feel”.There is no treatment, it eventually sorts itself out. My breast is still larger than the normal one, and feels warmer to me. However, had my annual mammo and ultrasound in January and everything is fine.
Hope you can get to see a bc surgeon for a proper diagnosis to put your mind at rest.
Liz.

Thanks Seabird and Lizziecee,

I work in a hospital, and managed to get someone to do me a favour last thursday, and i got an ultrsound with a breast surgeon who specialises in reconstruction!..Must be the only perk of working for NHS! Anyway, im reassured, no lumps! Im interested in the lypmodema theory and Mondors, the Dr thought it was very large but probaly due to radiotherapy, and as tissue poor and might not heal, she would consider a variation of mastectomy and immediate reconstruction for cosmetic reasons, but in time, not right now!..She also would make the other more pert!..Im 42, boobs were 34E prior to diagnosis, so im thinking of a reduction as im only 5ft 1, and wear size 10 jeans and 14/16 tops!..i feel fat…but in the scheme of things, no cancer there so is it worth such major surgery?

Thanks again,

Jill
