biopsy results

hi this is my first post . i have been diagnosed with intermediate dcis and today saw the doc pre surgery.she said that the biopsy showed microcalsifications but also showed some abnormal cells which they wont know what they are until i have surgery, this has now made me worry .doesanyone know what these might mean and why could they not identify them from the biopsy .

Hi Hollieollie,
They can normally give an interim diagnosis with a biopsy (as this is only a sample of the cells), but its not until after surgery, and the removal of the tumor, that they can give you a full histology report.
This is absolutely normal, unfortunately there is often another wait between surgery and getting the full report.
Best wishes
Marguerite

Hi Hollieollie- Marguerite is spot on: the initial tests only give an interim diagnosis and the medics will only see the full picture after surgery. The waiting IS hard - and it sounds as if your doctor is just trying to prepare you in case you may need further treatment.
You will probably have to wait 2 weeks after surgery for your surgeon to explain the full histology report to you- this is the norm though quicker in some hospitals.

thank you that has made me feel a little better x its still a worry but they have said it will probably only be 3 weeks before i have surgery then another 2 weeks for the results. this site has been so helpful as i have never heard of dcis before ! thanks hollie x
