Blood pressure test problem - help!

I have always bruised easily but I had a procedure done recently and needed to have my blood pressure taken four times within an hour. As a result, my upper arm from elbow to shoulder was practically one big bruise. As I have had axillary clearance they can only use the one arm. I am no slender fairy and need to have the larger cuff but I have had blood pressure tests before without having such massive bruising. I think these automatic blood pressure pumps which whizz from light pressure to strangulation in three seconds flat make the problem worse.

I was wondering if I should ask the medics if they could take blood pressure readings on my leg or if I would just get bruised there instead. I don’t even know which part of the leg they use (calf or thigh?). Any suggestions or information gratefully received.

I have had it done on an ankle when in hospital and requiring regular checks. I haven’t had bruising on the leg - or the arm for that matter, and like you am amply proportioned and need the bigger cuff. Sometimes the automatic pump does feel very uncomfortable though - tighter than in the old days when it was tested manually. I wonder if it is worth mentioning to your bcn or onc - maybe some medication you are on makes you more prone to bruising?

Thanks finty. I’m not taking any blood thinning drugs - not even a quarter of an aspirin so I don’t think that is the cause. I will certainly be asking them to test my blood pressure on my ankle - much more civilized!
