Blood tests while taking Anastrozole

I’ve recently read that regular blood tests should be taken to check liver and kidney function whilst on Anastrozole.  I’ve been on Anastrozole for 18 months and this has never been mentioned to me.  Does anyone have any info on this?

Well … I asked the oncologist in December and she said no, one GP said she hadn’t heard of it and last week another GP said yep bloods needed! It was in context of fatigue as well but she seemed a bit irked bloods aren’t done by oncology. I get my results tomorrow, so watch this space!

I had to ask my Doc at one year review for blood tests, but she only said she could due to my age (62!!) as though that qualified me - nothing to do with BC/anastrozole. Arrgh. I would demand blood tests just to check on all those functions - I’ve been found to have mild neutropenia & need constant blood tests now! :catvery-happy:x

Many thanks for the replies.  I’ve got a review with my GP on 26/1 which will include blood test for under-active thyroid (picked up in my pre-op tests) so I might mention it to him - though a bit frightened of yet another problem rearing its ugly head…

Hi. Just back from the doctors. Unfortunately (and despite fasting!) the cholesterol box wasn’t ticked, so back again Friday next week for more blood taking! I’m thankfully not neutropenic, but my CRP is a bit raised (I thought I was just feeling CR*P!), so will test that again too and a possible referral to the Chronic Fatigue service if no improvement in a month and if getting back to work is a struggle. However, I was told my liver and kidney function are ok. I’ve been on Anastrazole for 4 months now. My GP has said they will continue to monitor.

Raised CRP is a non specific marker in the blood according to my GP. She said it was only slightly raised and probably due to the infection I was fighting, but she wanted to redo just in case. Ruthie, I’d be interested to know if you have any fatigue problems? I had the same treatment plan as you. Chemo was considered but I was lucky to be eligible for an Oncotype test and chemo was going to be of no added benefit. X

It does feel very unreal at times. I was also picked up at routine screening and chemo was only thrown into the mix after lump was bigger than expected and I wondered if because they had to go in twice to get better margins for lumpectomy. I had clear nodes too. I work full time but have only just started back on a phased return. Not sure how I will cope with 5 days! I like a good waffle me and it’s definitely good to hear stories. I hope they can help with your thyroid xx

I’m having repeat bloods for CRP and cholesterol tomorrow - race you to results!!

Hi Ruthie
My results today! All back to normal other than slightly raised cholesterol. GP says leastof my worries, as I wait for genetics, so monitoring only. Hope you’re ok and a relief I’m sure other than repeats xx

I need to cut the cheese!
