I went for my routine appointment yesterday, and when i told them about the pains in my back and chest I was sent straight for xrays and have got to wait for a bone scan. I don’t want to think the worse but already am. Do you usually have to wait long for a bone scan. Can anyone give me information on what to expect.
It is julie from the Liverpool Meet.
You will get your app for bone scan at Clatt in 1-2 weeks. Cannot remember which treatment you are on, but most of the hormonals cause generalised aches and pains.
I do not want to trivialise what you are feeling (cos its horrible) but try not to worry. It could be nothing.
The bone scan itself is fine. Its a bit inconvenient because you have to wait at the hospital for a few hours. They have a tv, lots of mags and a drinks machine. You are a bit radioactive for a while.
The procedure itself is a piece of cake. You just lie down for a bit. Its not invasive or scary. You want to get the results there and then but you have to wait to see your Consultant.
If you have any other question please ask…Julie x
Thank you so much for replying and the information, I will try not to worry but its difficult. I didn’t know that about the machine i thought it was like a MRI.
It is no where near as claustrophobic as an MRI. I know it is difficult, believe me. What treatment are you on? From what I recall you are not long out of treatment!!
I was 8 years clear after my surgery but did have a few blips, scares and bone scans. Each time was as traumatic and I know the mind goes into overdrive.

Hi Julie,
sorry you are having to through the panic of, bone scan waiting for the results and all the what if’s. Pointless to say try not to worry! If you do have bone problems and need byphosphonates they are usually given every three weeks and are very effective Dawnh has had bone mets for a very long time and has lots of experience that she will share with you. I had bone met diagnose nearly 5 years ago and only started byphos in May with really good results so far. I am on pamidronate and other than a few aches after each infusion it has been plain sailing.
Good luck.
Love Debsxxx
Thank you for that I know i sound stupid, but is the treatment you had chemo. Why did they leave it so long and how long after your primary was you. I hope you don’t mind me asking. I hope you are feeling well it sounds so insipid but don’t want to seem like its all about me who is not sure i have it when you are dealing with it every day.
I’ve had several bone scans and although the scanner (gamma camera) is quiet, not like MRI, it does go close to the body and I keep my eyes shut, more relaxing! Best to ask your hospital though, it could be a different type of equipment.
The scan is no big deal, but waiting for the results … I hope your scan is clear.
You really have been through it and I am useless at sayin things on here but i#m really grateful for your time. I will try not to worry I think once I know they I will just have to deal with it like everyone on here does.
Mrs Blue thanks for your advice I don’t know why I thought it was an MRI I really need to ask more questions, but my mind goes blank. I will practice closing my eyes he he.
