Bone scan

Hello again. You might remember me from my post about moving house a few months back. My wife Fi was diagnosed in August, had mastectomy and chemo, and is now 2 days away from finishing the rads.

We use this site a lot - don’t post very much - I suppose we should as the support here is brilliant, but with 2 young kids there’s never the time.

Anyway, the reason for posting tonight is that Fi had a CT scan in early Jan which was all clear, or so we thought, but the consultant phoned us last week to say there was a bit of softness in the bones. So Fi had a bone scan on Friday and thankfully the radiologist was going on holiday next week so he finished all his work before he left. BUT he has seen what he describes as 2 “miniscule” spots on Fi’s spine and sternum that need more investigation.

Poor Fifi has to have yet more x rays on Monday, and hopefully we’ll find out then or Tuesday whether it’s the dreaded C. If not, happy days - the rads finish on Tuesday and we can start to draw a line under the treatment. But if it is, what next? Can it be treated? I’ve read posts talking about living for more than 5 years. Is it really that bad?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, i can’t really offer you any advice, but the helpline on here is very good and should be able to offer you the support you need, all the very best

Hi colmw

It sounds like you’re feeling quite anxious at the moment, which is understandable under the circumstances. As Alison mentioned above we do have a help line which offers advice and support. If you think it would help to talk in confidence about your worries and concerns please give them a call on free phone 0808 800 6000. The staff here are all either breast care nurses or people who have personal experience of breast care issues. The lines are open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturdays 9am - 2pm.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Kind regards

Hi

Just noticed your post and want to say that I’ve been living with bone mets since 2004 (original diagnosis in 1995) and that I’m doing okay and there are a lot of us ladies who are in a similar position. I have been on bisphosphonates (bone strengthening treatment) since then and also had radiotherapy and, for the majority of the time, my back doesn’t bother me now.

Good luck to you and your wife and hope that things will be okay for you.

Pinkdove

Hi, Pinkdove and I always seem to follow each other round on threads like this. Spots showing up in the bones can be due to a number of other relatively innocent causes. But let us encourage you - I was original dx 18 yrs ago and have had extensive bone mets for over 5 years now. Like pinkdove I have been on bone strengthening drugs all that time and radiotherapy to the more painful areas. Apart from pain initially I am relatively pain free now without needing painkillers. So long as I don’t overdo things (all husbands please note - housework a definite no-no) so hope the news you both get is going to be good.

Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately it turned out that although the spine was clear the sternum isn’t. I’m off to the Secondary forum for my next post :frowning:

PS Women are definitely the stronger sex. How on earth my wife has coped with all the ups and downs I’ll never know. I used to think I needed to look after her - changed my mind after her 56 hour labour and emergency caesarean with our son. My new opinion of her as the strong one in our relationship has only been reinforced by her strength and good humour during this nightmare. And all of you who suffer so much yet are prepared to help others are simply an inspiration.
