Does anyone know how often you can have bone scans.
I had one in March which was clear thankfully. However for the past 2 months i just cant sit on hard benches or chairs have excruciating pain. I thought it was maybe piles but i dont think it is. This past week i am in agony with my lower back and left hip. Mind going haywire.
I dont want more radiation but wonder if another scan would be safe so soon after March.
Thanks

I wouldn’t worry about that - if you are in that much pain, you need to find out what’s going on. An x-ray might be the first step.
Thanks Phoebe
Was a bit upset no one had replied to my posting ie bone scans.
the pain is still there but i am hoping its muscular or weight gain which is awful.
See Consultant surgeon on Fri so will mention it. However i am seeing him about my other mastectomy. Hopefully get a date for it.

Hi Liverbird
I have had a number of bone scans my onc says that to have them more than 6 monthly is not worth it as no real significant changes can be seen - so if you had one in March you could have another now - I agree with Phoebe though - if you are in real pain then get an x-ray in the interim.
Good luck

Hi Liverbird
Sorry you were upset and no one replied. Weekends can be a bit funny can’t they? I’m guessing it may have had something to do with the unusually sunny weather finally!
Hope you are feeling a bit better. I would agree with the others and definitely look into a scan to ease your worries. Good plan to talk through with your consultant and good luck with getting a date for your additional surgery.
I am seeing mine every week at the moment due to weekly taxol so am looking forward to seeing a little less of them after these 4 weeks are up!! ;o)

Hi Liverbird, can’t really help you as i’ve never had a bone scan, but i would be asking for one if i had the pain your describing, just to be on the safe side, anyway, just to let you now i don’t often go on this one, but will do more in the future, take care, thinking about you
lots of love

Thanks for replies just feeling totally desperate at the moment. I just cant wait til Friday when i go the hosp as i cant cope with the pain. I am pushing and pushing myself to carry on as normal,. Now off to the midlands to see two daughters and must be cheerful they cant cope with me all fearful.
I feel very scared as although i have had lots of pains in the past and bone scans i have never quite experienced anything like this. I can’t even sleep with it which has never happened before.
Nice to see you posting on here Alison, I love this site and feel safe and cared for here. also good to know BCC staff are only a phone call away and always so professional yet caring.

Hi Ruth
Sorry you are feeling so unwell. You must get this checked out. What was the result of your last bone scan? I know you are thinking the worst and it is not for me to say don’t, but my friend tells me xrays are actually better at spotting bone mets than bone scans, which are better for flagging up poss potential bone probs, i.e. earlier stages.
Hope you can get some peace of mind from your consultant tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.
Love Irene
Thanks those who replied, been to hosp today and xray and blood tests were clear, I still have excruciating back pain and he is referring me to someone and also said mention it to oncologist in 3 weeks.
Said as i had had a bone scan in March he didnt want to do another one.
Fortunately I have a wonderful surgeon.
Oh well planning on working next week and putting pain to the back of my mind. although looking after babies and children isnt an easy job with backache and leg pain.
Our 25th wedding anniversary and my birthday soon so will plan something nice.
Plus 2 weddings to go too, lovely cheerful events.

Hi Liverbird. Glad to hear your test were ok, pheww ths dreadful waiting game we all have to undergo!!
I had very similar problems, severe back problems, and no apparent injury etc. Onc suggested coming of Arimidex for a few months and try Femara, but this did not improve back problems at all, although other joint pains went completely. In the meantime GP arranged for bloodtest (calcium levels etc.) and back x-ray. Blood test ok and x-ray showed up ‘degenerative’ changes, so probably old age creeping on. Now waiting to have another DEXA scan to see whether I am developing oesteoporosis. Always something else , isn’t it. Also went back on Arimidex, as Femara gave me the most horrendous day and nightsweats and bad headaches. So now, no headaches, only a few sweats, but bad joint pains again. Like you, trying to just get on with things, ultimately noot much we can do about the side effects. Hope you enjoy your forthcoming events and congrats for your silver wedding and birthday. Off on hols myself for 14 days in the sun, can’t wait - first long flight since end of chemo - so fingers crossed everything will go ok.
Hugs.
Birgit
