If you have just started using this forum and are going through the process of genetic testing: you are not alone! There are alot more people in the same position as you.
I am 33 and my sister died age 35 of breast cancer in march this year and I went through genetic testing to find I tested positive for brac1.
Apart from my sister the only other family member who had bc was my dad’s sister who died of ovarian cancer before she was 50.
I got the news about the gene fault in september and have decided to have a double mastectomy with reconstructive surgery and implants. It is extremely stressful especially when you have watched someone you love die.
My operation is due 31st dec and it is very scarey but it is for the best. I am not suggesting this is best for you. If you want to meet others like us maybe try this forum too. I use it daily at the moment.
Hi katie,
Thanks for mentioning that. I’ve just sent off a blood sample for BRCA testing as I have premenopausal BC (diagnosed in march) and my mum’s sister also had it (10+ years ago and still going strong!) My sister initiated the tests, and we have 2 daughters each so want to know.
However, I’m a bit worried about insurance in the future for them all, as there’s a moratorium (whatever that is!) on insurance companies using this info to penalise us until 2011 - but it will soon be here. I guess after that, if there’s no law passed, it may make life insurance/health insurance etc more expensive for those who know they have the gene. Maybe I won’t tell them…?
Anyone else know anything about this?

I’m so sorry you have bc. Good luck with your treatment.
I don’t know about the insurance but was horrified that my private health care wouldn’t cover the costs of my surgery as it is preventative! I told them I thought it was really bad as without the surgery I woud probably get cancer and cost them lots of money!
