Brca 2 positive & hormone treatment/

Anyone still on hormone treatment after 5 years
Hi all, have posted before but not too sure if it went to the right place, been on 3 different types of tabs without too many problems. I am staying on for another 3 years due to brca 2 gene and wondered if anyone is the same? I am not sure if it’s because I have still not decided on preventative surgery for right breast.
Had mx with recon March 06.

Sorry, I can’t really help, but I think if the oncs think you will benefit by being on the hormone tablets for longer they’ll keep you on them. I’m due to start Arimidex in a couple of weeks so I’m at the start of that particular journey.

Best wishes Stella

I was told tamoxyfen for 5 years (maximum because of the side effect of cancer of the uterus for more than 5 years) and then arimidex for a future 5 years at least. This was before I was diagnosed with brca 1, and before I got bc again (triple neg this time) in the other breast.

im brca 2 and started tamox 5 years ago with a year off in the middle after getting a second cancer so should finish them next year, no mention of staying on any longer and no actual evidence to suggest this is beneficial… the research carried out on how long was of benefit was based on high risk and gene carriers and the optimum range was 5 years so not exactly sure why your team are wanting you to stay on them longer… would be interested to know if they have some local research or if they just want to ‘be on the safe side’ which isnt always so safe.

I think that a number of people are now having 3 or 5 years of an aromatase inhibitor after 5 years of tamoxifen. It may be based on the trial that did Letrozole after tamoxifen.

Hi Eliza
Thanks for your reply, I wasn’t aware that there was a trial done for Letrozole so it’s sort of explained things a bit. I suppose I am at fault because I dont ask enough questions!
Take care
