BRCA1 - Surgery Question

Hi ladies,

In Oct 2013 I had WLE & SLNB, followed by Rads and Tamoxifen / Zoladex Injections, I am 41 with no children so been dealing with the side effects of immediate Menopause etc, but getting there.

Got genetics test back two weeks ago and it showed BRCA1 gene change :frowning: Genetics counsellor went through options and %'s of recurrence and Ovarian Cancer. Surprisingly, BRCA1 usually causes hormone negative cancer and mine was very hormone positive so I’m not really sure if that means anything?

Anyway…clear and sensible suggestions were obviously removal of Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes and Bi Mastectomy. I am pretty much terrified if I am being honest.

I have my appointment to see my breast surgeon mid july but i don’t have my appointment through for gynaecologist yet. I wanted to ask you if you had any advice or experience of this and I think my main questions / worries just now are -

I am really overweight, I joined SW 3 weks ago and have lost 15lbs already but trust me when I say I am not near a BMI of 30 yet. What are my chances of them offering me reconstruction? When surgeon was talking to me intitally last year she said reconstruction wasn’t always successful at my size but didn’t say it wouldn’t be done.I don’t know if that is just because i didn’t need it then so no point discussing it?

What are the recovery periods for Bi-Mx without reconstruction and with? What are the recovery times of Ovaries / fallopian tubes removal both keyhole and open surgery? Finally, is there usually a wait for risk reducing surgery or is it done fairly quickly?

Sorry for so many questions and obviously I will know more at Breast appt in July but I have been having all these things and scenarios running round my mind for two weeks and feel like i’m going to explode

Thanks everyone in advance x
