breast cancer 18 years ago

Now I am having gynae problems.I was told by the consultant at the hospital that I would need to take topical HRT to try and sort things out.
My problem is because I had breast cancer so long ago the hospital did not do the test they do today. I took tamoxifen for 4 years and do no if I needed it or not.
Now I do not have any idea what to do take it and worry or do not take it and suffer

Hi I am seeing gynae tommorrow , only minor spotting had Bc last year on Tamoxifen 5 months but told to stter clear of phytooestregens( soya etc) so i would not think Hrt a good idea because Tam is given to counteract Oestrogen I would have a word with Gp or speak to moderator. Also Can you not find out if you can see BC before making any decions. It must be difficult for you but well done 18yrs wonderful.

I believe Tamoxifen is only given to women who’s cancer was hormone responsive but even then it possible that your cancer was estrogen responsive and the hormone cream may be progesterone based so it’s not clear cut even then. It might be worth having a word with one of the breast care nurses at the hospital and asking them who you should talk to, they may be able to get you an appointment with one of the oncologists who can make sure you get the right kind of treatment.

One of my own cancers had a low response to hormones so I can’t take pills but some people believe that the creams that are applied internally (or pessaries) are OK as they don’t get into the blood stream so that could be an option for you.

Basically I think you need specialist advice.

Hi tele1

As well as the support you are receiving from the other users it might help to give the BCC helpline a call as here you can talk this through with one of our trained members of staff who can offer you support and information. The staff here are all either breast care nurses or people who have personal experience of breast care issues. The number to call is 0808 800 6000 the lines open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturdays 9am - 2pm.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Kind regards
Sam (BCC Facilitator)
