Breast Cancer and Hair Loss

We are looking for people affected by breast cancer to take part in a photo shoot for the new version of our information leaflet ‘Breast Cancer and Hair Loss’ as well as fill out a questionnaire on your experiences. In order to take part in this opportunity you have to currently be experiencing hair loss.

The leaflet is an essential information source for to help those affected by breast cancer cope with losing their hair as a result of treatment for breast cancer. Hair may be very much part of a person’s self-image and losing it may affect confidence and self-esteem. Being prepared for this possibility may make it easier to cope with. The booklet explains how hair loss may occur and the effect it may have. It also looks at caring for the hair and scalp during and after treatment and discusses wigs and other kinds of headwear. There is also a pull-out giving ideas for wearing scarves and different ways of tying them.

The photo shoot will take place on Friday August 1st at a luxury penthouse apartment near London Bridge, central London. Those taking part will work alongside our excellent photographer who ran a previous photo shoot in January 2008 and whose work can be seen in the photographs currently on our website and in our publications. A member of our Headstrong team will be on hand during the day to ensure that you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the day. Those that take part will fill out a questionnaire on their experiences beforehand to make up the content on the leaflet which combines the experiences of real people alongside professional advice to ensure those affected by breast cancer are as prepared as possible in the event of experiencing hair loss due to treatment for breast cancer.

We will provide refreshments on the day and will reimburse all travel expenses – please be sure to keep hold of your receipts.

If you would like to take part, or would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact Vicky Lane

Hi,
If I can talk my friend into coming with me, we would like to come. She has lost all her hair and has just started to have new growth and I have been using the cold cap and have some hair but thin and with some loss on the top so wear hairbands over it, my invention!! We are both in the middle of chemo at present but that looks like a good week to be able to travel.

Hey, Just to say, my comment above wasn’t meant to be flippant - I would volunteer for your photo shoot but my hair is back!

Respectfully
Buckwheat

I have emailed, but no reply.

Hi Lolly

I have alerted the relevant department about your email and I’m sure they will be back to you soon

best wishes

Ann

Hi everyone

Vicky has asked me to tell you she has been out of the office, but is now back and will get back to everyone who has contacted her by the end of today.

best wishes

Ann

Hi ISM!,
I have just started epi and due to loose my hair around the 1st-7th! I am prepared to go through the shave if it helps you?
i was going to do it myself around that time anyway, just thought it might help others through it if they see someone else first?
All the best anyway
Gillian

Can I suggest a section on what to do when it grows back, I finished chemo end of Nov and I have this mop that only grows upwards and outwards. We seemed to get so much advice on how to cope with hair-loss but nobody can tell you what to do at this stage!!! I currently look like a hamster who has stuck its finger in an electric socket.

(I know I sound ungrateful, but at least when I was losing hair most people could guess what you were going thro, now they only think I have a very bad hairdresser!!)

M

hey catflap - i think i am with you - mine is only about half an inch long because i only finished epi a few months ago but it has a mind of it’s own - the off centre tintin quiff for starters…

I think anybody who goes to this day will havea wonderful time tho!!

Hi,

I would love to come down to smoke for the photo shoot, but am having 3rd dose of Epi tomorrow and expect to feel YUK this weekend. My hair started to fall out exactly two weeks after the first dose and was all gone apart from a ‘baby hair covering’ four days later. I’m happy to fill in a questionnaire if that’s any help.

What about a section for when it doesnt grow back? well, not enough to go without headscarf or wig.
