Breast cancer and pain

I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer and awaiting scan results. The cancer is in my lymph nodes but now I am having pain in my breast and under my arm and convinced my cancer is spreading.
I’m freaking out waiting… can you offer any help?

Hi. I have this too.
Did you have a biopsy?

Yes
It’s in the lymph node … but it didn’t hurt before. I’m so worried this means it’s getting worse while I wait.

A nurse told me the pain under your arm will be from the biopsy. It’s hard to remain calm and rational isn’t it ?!

Hi charley,

Thanks for your post.

It is understandable to worry about the possibility of the cancer having spread while you are waiting for the scan results. You are not alone in feeling this way.

Any wait can be difficult but it’s important all the necessary investigations are completed so your team can plan the most appropriate treatment. It may be helpful to talk to your breast care nurse team about how you’re feeling and the pain you are experiencing. As @flnders678 explains the pain could be from the biopsy you had.

Our information on ways to manage anxiety after a breast cancer diagnosis might be of some help. And this section of the forums might be if interest.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can also be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0114 263 6490 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

It sounds like you are having a difficult time at the moment. Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions.
