Hello wombz,
Thank you for your post.
It’s understandable you are scared about having a flare up of rheumatoid arthritis after being taken off the biologic drug, whilst you wait for your biopsy results.
People who are on biologic drugs are often advised by their rheumatology team to pause them if cancer is suspected. This is because biologics affect the immune system, and doctors want to reduce the risk of infection or any interference with any potential treatment you might need for breast cancer. It’s difficult to say at this point how long you might need to be off of your biologic treatment. It will depend on a number of factors, including the biopsy result and if you need treatment. It’s important to consider the impact the rheumatoid arthritis has on your quality of life. If the biopsy does confirm breast cancer, your treatment team and your rheumatologist will work together to balance treating the cancer with keeping your arthritis symptoms as well controlled as possible.
While you’re waiting, it’s important to let your rheumatology team know how worried you are about flares and pain. They may be able to adjust other medications or offer additional support to help manage your symptoms in the meantime.
Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions.
