Hi everyone
In January went for a routine breast screening as I am 51yrs old and the result was clear. Just after that I started to get breast pain in my right breast and if I sqeezed my nipple I got a dark brown discharge.
My GP gave me some antibiotics, which did’nt work and decided to write to the breast clinic. On Monday I went for my appointment and came back feeling very confused.
The consultant said that as my mammogram was clear and that the discharge was not profuse it was not serious and told me that he would see me in 3 months time or if it had cleared to cancel the appointment. He did examine me with his hands for any lumps but not find anything.
He was quite abrupt and never offered any reason why this is happening to me. I feel in limbo.
Anyone had similar problems ?

Hi Mazzy,
What a worry, I empathise, awful not knowing what is happening.
Sorry you feel the Consultant did’nt explain things to you, maybe you could refer back to your GP.
wishing you luck.

Hi Mazzy
I had the same thing a discharge from my right breast when i was 40. I had the fluid tested and they decided it was innocent.
The reason they gave was that it was probably a wart in the duct. If it didnt cause me any problems they would leave it.
Mine was always about 7 days before a period and any other time if i squeezed the nipple.
I had a mammogram and everything was fine however after 2 years the discharge got worse and i was offered the option of having my ducts removed (there is a name for it but cant remember it).
As my mum had just died i couldnt face the surgery then the discharge cleared up, but then came back.
I kept asking and asking ‘this doesnt mean i will get breast cancer does it’ reply was always ‘no’.
I suppose they were correct as i still have my right breast minus ducts in it. My cancer was in the left breast.
My advice would be if your overly concerned ask to have the ducts removed. I dont get discharges anymore however i still have pain in the right breast.
Try not to worry too much I am the worlds greatest one and it doesnt help.

I can echo Ruth’s experience. I had a bloodstained discharge from my left nipple in Dec 2000. I had an immediate referral and then the ducts removed (Hadfields procedure I think) but all was well and benign.
My bc is in the right breast
So i hope there is nothing for you to worry about

Hi everyone
Thanks for the replies.
Have made an appointment with my GP and ask his advice. Still a little worried about it all but I suppose the consultant knows his job.
Actually the pain has been a little easier this week, have not had to take any painkillers. I also phoned the breast nurse and she said that it may be duct ectasia, for which sometimes treatment may not be needed unless it is severe
Hope you all go along ok
