Please can anyone reassure me - I had a doctor refer me to a breast clinic over 2 years ago where an ultrasound found nothing. 2 years on I still have the pain in my left breast so returned yesterday. The doctor felt my breast but said she didn’t feel anything but referred me for a mammogram to investigate the pain source. I’m terrified - can breast cancer hurt and as bad as it sounds wouldn’t I have been aware of this before 2 years if it was cancer. I’m so scared x x

So sorry you are having this worry right now. As a general rule, breast cancer doesn’t hurt, and I’m sure the breast clinic would have found something by now if it was cancer. However, there are many reasons for having pain in the breast area. I am giving you a link to a booklet you can download from this website:

It explains these conditions. I have one of them. Costochondritis, it is very painful at times. I hope this booklet will reassure you somewhat.

Not sure how old you are? I have had pain on and off in both breasts for over 30 years now, at times it’s not exaggerating to say it feels like I’ve been kicked by a very angry horse. It’s apparently much more common than we would expect and is often cyclical and hormonal but also sometimes not: some of it is just never explained but is completely harmless, though of course distressing and uncomfortable.
As I understand it, most cancers never hurt. Being referred again is a good thing. You are in the right hands and the experts should help you get to the bottom of it: even if they don’t and never identify the cause, they can certainly rule out anything sinister. I’ve had more visits to breast clinics than I would have chosen but they really aren’t anything to be worried about in themselves. The people there are usually very kind and sensitive. They know how you feel.
