Breath holding for radiotherapy

Hello all. I had my planning session for radiotherapy a week ago and was expecting to start on 1st September. However, I’ve been contacted by the Royal Marsden to say they cannot go ahead as planned as there is an unacceptable risk to my heart. So I’ve been asked to return for another planning session and they are going to deliver my radiotherapy whilst I hold my breath (to raise the chest wall away from the heart). This all sounds very dramatic to me. Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven’t experienced this but I did have radiotherapy at the Sutton branch of the Marsden. To hold your breath shouldn’t be too much of a problem because most of the radiotherapy sessions involve positioning your body to line up with the machine; the actual radiotherapy is over in a very short time.

I hope someone else can come along and give you a better answer.

Good luck and do tell us how you get along.
