Thanks Long lashes. I have High grade DCIS and also two small (or rather I had two small invasive tumours) I am so relieved to have clear nodes. I am off to the Marsden today to have an MRI scan, but whatever the result today they have said its pretty certain to be a full mastectomy!

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Hi Sarah

I think its down to one thing MONEY!

I was under my local hospital the PRU in Kent, and after getting my histology results they planned to do a full mastectomy and reconstruction two weeks later! I went along with it until, I bowed under the pressure of my family to go to the Royal Marsden in London for a second opinion. My mum was treated there. One of the admin staff told me off the record that they have so many cancer patients every week, that they just dont have the funding or money to give everyone an MRI scan. The hospital could not cope that on two occassions I sat there for three hours waiting to be seen by the doctor!

The Royal Marsden is a centre of excellence, and they have more funding and more time as cancer is all they do, whereas other hospitals have to split the budgets between departments etc. So I believe its the norm there to have everything thats needed in the best interest of the patient, rather than the quickest cheapest option as my hospital were just going to take the breast off, whereas the Marsden won’t recommend this unless its really needed, or at the very least will give me a choice. I had no choice at the PRU.

The PRU were going to make me better, but because they couldnt afford to do the MRI I could have ended up being over treated, rather than been given an option if possible.

I have had bc twice with a 14 yr gap, 1st time was ext dcis + inv grade 3, had mx,had chemo because tumor was 7cm, I had no mri or bone scan but I had clear lymph nodes.

This time I have the same, as in ext DCIS ,the grade was stage 2, but I had extensive LVI + this time node involvement so had ct& bone scans, I think node involvement was the line for futher scans???

love to all Jeanette.

p.s. no results yet???

Hi J

My nodes are totally clear (thankfully) and hopefully all the invasive has gone and also have no vascular involvement. I have been told they want to do the MRI to see if and how much DCIS is left in my breast as my margins weren’t clear so I can make an informed choice about the mastectomy.

That makes perfect sence to me, remember I am unlucky to have got it in the other side, I don’t think the stats for that are mega high, so remember I have had 14 glorious years since my 1st battle, I went on to marry and have 2 beautiful children… there is life after it all, xxxxxxxxx J

Thank you, I am pretty ok about it all. I have kinda, hmm this is a biggie, decided if I do need the mastectomy to go for a bilateral one rather than have the worry of it coming back. My head is telling me thats the best decision for me, but my heart is kinda saying something else. I get my MRI results on the 31st and I will see the consultant then and I guess decisions and balls will start to get rolling.

Hope you do as well again and have lots of grand children and then great grand children.

it’s a two edged sword, I couldn’t decide to have a preventative mx on the other side… do I wish I had yeh now maybe! however over the years the mammo on the left side has been the ‘baramoter’ if you like for how things have been it’s a tough decision for sure?? I think that , as I said before the stats for having new primary on other side isn’t high, if of course you don’t have the genetic involvement, Thanks for your good wishes, my two are only 7&9, so grandkids are a way ofF yet but I certainly have every hope of holding them in my arms!!!( even if I am already 48!) JX

Your certainly right about it being a double edged sword! My heart says one thing and my head another. My mum and sister spoke to me today and said have you had any thoughts on what you are going to do, which route etc. I said nope its going to the back of my mind until I am on the train up to london next Tuesday to see the consultant, then I will give it house room!!

I really hope you do well again and enjoy your lovely children.

All the best.
