Hi My daughter is 21 and about 4 months ago found a lump on her breast. She didn’t tell me for 3 months but when she did, although I wasn’t very worried took her to the GP to have it checked. He then referred her as an urgent case to the breast clinic. She had a needle biopsy done followed by a scan the following day, however there was a lot of bruising around the lump so we were told she would have to have another scan at a later date. We were also told she would get her results in a weeks time, however after not hearing from the clinic for 3 weeks we had to contact them where she was told that the biopsy was fine but they rebooked her another appointment. We returned there the week before xmas and was told that the lump was not cancerous and that she had a fibrodema but there was some bleeding around it so would have to have another scan but probably wouldn’t need to be seen at clinic again. She went for her 2nd scan today and they were able to measure the size of the lump but she has now been told she needs to go back to the clinic for another biopsy under local aneasthetic. IWe are both very confused and are getting worried now. The clinic seem quite laid back about it all and we are now wondering if the 1st biopsy was Ok why she would have to have another. Can anyone please help on this matter? Also worrying about how long we will have to wait, afterall it took our phone call to get the 1st lot of results, how long should we give it to recieve another appointment?
I’m sorry that your daughter has to go through something like this at such a young age. As a parent I can certainly understand your worry.
Was the first needle biopsy a fine needle aspiration or a core needle biopsy? The core needle would have removed a small amount of tissue verses fluid. When I had the FNA the result came back as “atypical ductal hyperplasia, in which a more abnormal pattern of growth is seen, and which is associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer”. My dr ended up following it up with a core needle biopsy but also did an excisional biopsy which removes the entire lump or suspicious area.
The reason I’m asking is that sometimes FNA results are questionable so the dr follows up with a tissue biopsy just to confirm for sure that everything is okay.
The results usually take a couple of days to a week, at least that has been my experience.
Please keep us posted, hope this was helpful.
Always,
Janet
Hi Janet
Thanks very much for your reply. I must say it does help to hear from other people.
My daughter had the fine needle biopsy done and was then told everything was fine and she probably wouldn’t need to be seen again. However after having the second scan, she has now been told she needs to have the core biopsy done and am wondering why. We have been told not to worry, but how can you not? I am very confused by it all.
Any info would be greatly appreciated to give us further understanding of whats going on and what will happen next. Just hoping we won’t have to wait too long for the appointment now.
Thanks for your reply, will let you know what happens next.
Worriedmum
Keep thinking positively. Again, FNA aren’t always as reliable as a core biopsy. The doctor probably wants to confirm the non-cancerous result of the FNA. It’s better to be on the safe side that she is so young.
Take care,
Janet
Hi Janet
Thanks once again for your comments. I am trying to stay positive but it’s all so confusing to me. I am going out of my mind with worry but then when reading posts on here, feel terrible that there are so many others, with problems so much worse than ours. Then I try to put our problems into perspective and am trying to think that at least they(the hospital) are being thorough and obviously just double checking to be on the safe side(as you so rightly stated).
Are you OK now or are you still under going treatment? I do hope you are doing OK. BC is such a scary thing. Have had lots of experience of it but not with someone so young so am thinking maybe this is where my fear comes from. Your post has made me feel a little more positive as you have reiterated what a good friend of mine has told me. Thank you so much Janet.
We have an appointment on Monday so hopefully will get a bit more information then. Will let you know how we get on.
Best Wishes.
J
Hi Worried Mum,
I am sorry that you are having to worry so much at the moment, ‘Its in the job description’ I always tell my kids when they say not to worry about them.
I can only say that given your daughters age the lumps and bumps are unlikely to be cancerous, but you will know if you have read through the postings (Threads) on this site BC can strike at a very early age. I truly hope that things turn out to be fibrodema and gets treated successfully.
I think the urgency of the initial appointment is a positive sign, it shows your GP is on top of things, some young women have had a fight on their hands to be referred to Breast Clinics. The clinic is playing safe by rechecking the lump.
I am glad to hear Janet was able to help put your mind at ease a little. I am sure I will not be alone in saying that the waiting is the hardest so I wish you, your daughter and family all the best over the next few weeks.
Kindest regards
Carol
Hi Carol
Thank you very much for your reply.
I am feeling much more positive about things now and am just grateful that she was seen so quickly. I guess, it was the call back, after being told she wouldn’t need to be seen again which was so worrying. Like you said, its all part of the job description of being a mum, you just can’t help but worry.
I guess reading some of the threads on here, has made me realise how lucky she is to be checked out so thoroughly. I am kind of realising now that the chances of her having anything other than a benign complaint is pretty remote but obviously it does happen.
I am very grateful to both yourself and Janet for replying to me as it has helped me put things into context and made me a whole lot calmer. I actually feel a bit of a fraud now to be honest, especially after reading what others are having to go through. Once again thank you for your reply, it has helped a great deal.
Best Wishes
J
Hi J
You’re welcome, and you are far from a fraud. This site is doing its work if we can reply to people no matter what their concern is.
Please keep in touch as I want to hear you say woppi everything is turning out just fine!
Happy new year
Carol
Hi J
Hope all is well. Please keep us posted on how the biopsy goes. I’ll keep checking and praying for a good results. I’m sorry for the late post. I am actually back in treatments for bone mets and the radiation treatments have really affected my abdominal area so I’ve been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks. I have one more rad treatment tomorrow so hopefully things will settle back down.
Do take care.
Always,
Janet
Hi Carol and Janet
Thanks very much for keeping in touch with me, it is helping so much to be able to talk to someone.
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been too well with all the treatment Janet , hopefully once the treatment has finished you will feel so much better. It’s awful what this illness brings to all concerned. I take my hat off to you ladies for being so brave and to be able to help others in similar situations. I hope you both realsie how much your comments help.
Well, as for my daughter, we are still waiting for an appointment for the biopsy. We went to the GP on Monday to try to get some more info but came out just as confused as we were before. We were told not to worry as its probably nothing and they are just double checking. I think if we don’t get an appointment by next week we will ring them to see whats going on. I guess the non urgency of the appointment is a good thing, so am feeling a little more settled now. My daughter is so getting on with things and despite being very scared at first is just taking it all in her stride. I guess it helps that she works long hours and has a full social life!
Anyway will let you know how it goes and will keep in touch.
Thinking of you both.
Best Wishes Jx
WorriedMum;
Have you and your daughter received any news?
JanetK
Hi Soory I haven’t been on for a while but have had other things going on. We have been backwards and forwards to the hospital. My daughter had another scan and core biopsy. Finally told that it was indeed a fibrodema and wouldn’t require any further treatment. All was hopeful but then the lump started growing larger and larger and is now becoming clearlt visible. Got back in touch with the breast clinic and they are now booking her in to have the lump removed. I just can’t wait for her to have it done. I can’t even imagine to begin what you ladies must go through, it has certainly been quite a turbulent couple of months for us so really feel for all you ladies having to go through this. How is your treatment going? Hope you are doing Ok
Hi Worriedmum,
It is good to hear from you although, in the nicest way, not hearing from you was a little relieving. That’s because I thought if your daughter had been dx’d with BC we would have heard from you sooner.
Having said that having a rapidly growing fibrodema is no easy ride. She has done a good thing to return to the breast clinic as they will sort it a.s.a.p. I hope things continue to improve and your daughter is back on form in the very near future.
Best wishes to you both
Carol
