Can I get Pregnant?
Can I get Pregnant? Hi
I finished my chemo in December last year and my periods stopped after my 5th cycle. Now on Herceptin and Tamoxifen with no recurrence of my periods. My question is can I get pregnant even though I’m not having periods?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Take care
Nikki
Hi Nikki
Check with your onc - I didn’t need herceptin/tamoxifen but I’m sure that when we were talking about the potential of those two drugs they did say that it was still possible to get pregnant.
Sorry can’t help more!

Hi Nikki,
I know someone who got pregnant by accident whilst on Tamoxifen. She wasn’t having periods and had a ‘wee accident’ which wasn’t discovered until she was about 20 weeks! Both she and her baby are fine. Don’t know about the Herceptin side of things though.

Hi Nikki,
When I first started taking Tamoxifen my oncologist told me to be careful as I could get pregnant even if my periods are irregular.
Take care,

I am on tamoxifen (started March 07 for 5 years and am pre menopausal - just!! nearly 45) and my onc said periods may carry on or may stop - mine are a bit hit and miss at the moment. He did say though to take precautions as tamoxifen was originally used as a fertility drug and he had treated a few women who had taken it for BC and then found themselves expecting twins and triplets!! My husband was with me and paled at these words! Don’t think I can cope with that at the moment!! Hope this is useful xx
can I get pregnant Hello Nikki
I can maybe tell you what I got told on a weekend away with Breast Cancer Care ,Which was explained really well by the doctor I may say.Firstly you have to start counting from the month you stopped after all chemo/rads not during this then count two years from that month yes two I was surprised then you will probably be through the menopause.I am triple negative and since I do not get follow on drugs I am in menopause I have not had a period since november 05 but have to count from may 06 so have another year as she said they can come back in the 2 year period and has happened .As I have no period the pill is out because of hormones and coil as it is hard to be put in due to not menstrating ,I hope this helps you in other words Yes you can get pregnant I was told for SURE
take care annie
Hi Nikki
You don’t say whether you are trying to get pregnant or are trying NOT to get pregnant.
I haven’t had a period since halfway through chemo and have now been on Tamoxifen for 4 months. My surgeon, oncologist and breast care nurse all stressed the importance of NOT getting pregnant while on Tamoxifen due to the high risk of birth defects. There may be some women who have gotten pregnant by accident and gone on to have healthy babies but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a risk.
If you want to try to get pregnant you should discuss this with your doctor. If you are trying not to get pregnant you should use contraceptive even if you’re not having periods. Not having periods does not mean you are not ovulating.
I know of some women who have decided to withold using Tamoxifen for say a year in which time they have tried to conceive. Others have taken it for 2 years, stopped to conceive, then started it up again. This has all been in conjunction with medical advice
I would say this is too important an issue to decide based on opinions on a message board (if that doesn’t seem a bit ironic as I am giving you my opinion on a message board!)

Better be Careful! Hi everyone who has replied to my posting. I certainly am not trying to get pregnant so will be careful from now on.
Thanks for your advice.
