can they really know I've BC from an ultrasound

Hi
I had a mammogram and ultrasound and biopsy last week. On the same day the doctor advised me that it is very likely that I have breast cancer. My next appt is next wednesday.
My friends are asking how they can tell I have BC without getting the results of the biopsy - Can they tell form the ultrasound and mammogram - I’m sure the hospital wouldn’t have said this unless they were certain, but my friends comments are giving me doubts

I was diagnosed from u/s and mammogram basically. Surgeon said she had to say she was 99.9999999% certain until she got the ‘official’ results back. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, although I preferred it this way round than be given ‘false’ hope. Perhaps your friends just want to give you (and themselves) some optimism which is understandable.

Good luck anyway, Liz

Hiya Linda,

So sorry you’ve had to join this club and have to say that I was “advised” by the Radiologist from my mammogam & Biopsy that they were 85-90% certain from it that it was cancer - something to do with the density of the lump. I’d asked the odds 'cos I’m single mum & needed to get things sorted for kids as they were certain I’d need surgery.

If you need to talk to someone the help lines are brilliant and the number is at the top of the web page, and everyone on the forums is very supportive.

I wish you good luck and keep us posted here with any news.
Thinking of you.

Hi Linda,

Sorry you have joined us.
They told me after my u/s that I had cancer. I had a biopsy too which confirmed it when I went back for results of that a week later. They must have been very sure at u/s stage as told me I had to decide between lumpectomy and rads - or mastectomy, before my return.

Let us know how you get on and make use of all offers of help from friends and family.

Good luck. Stella xx

Hi Linda and welcome to the forums

As Helen has suggested it may help to call our helpline for further support on 0808 800 6000, the lines are open weekdays 9-5 and Sat 9-2. The forums will be down from Monday 7th to Wednesday 9th due to moving over to a new website but the helpline will be open so please do use it.

Take care
Lucy

Thank you to you all. Its silly but I was worrying more about what my friends think than on the matter in hand.

Like many of you have said this is going to be a long week - but now that i have found this forum I feel that I can talk to others who understand.

All the best to you all

Linda

Dear Linda

Sorry you have had to join us but you are very welcome.

I too had to go for mammogram/ultrasound last Monday (28th) and I was told it was cancer before the Consultant Radiologist even started the ultrasound. She said the Doctor was 99.9%sure and once she started having a look herself she too confirmed it was. I had the core biopsies taken so it can be 100% confirmed and also determine more about the cancer etc. I too am due to return for the results on Wednesday 9th to discuss the plan of attack!

It is a huge shock when you are given this news and I guess you are like me just trying to come to terms with it but at the same time not really believing it. I am told by many people on here that the waiting is the worse and you and I both know that it is. Hang on in there and as the site is going to be down do email me on for support. We are at the same stage and Wednesday is a huge day for us both so do talk if you need too I am here for you.

Big hugs
Tracy xx

My first post was almost identical.
I’d got it in my head that thing in my boob was a fatty blob thing, then saw more things under my arm during the scan, and the penny dropped. I too asked there and then if it was cancer, and was told she was very concerned, and yes she thought it was cancer. It was confirmed a week later and i’m waiting to ride on the pink roller coaster of chemo.
Good luck in which ever direction you go when you leave the waiting room, we’ll still be here.

Dear Linda

Sorry to hear your news.
I had the same experience as you, as my consultant told me straight after the mammogram and ultrasound that I had cancer. She felt it was unfair to send me away thinking all was well when she could quite clearly see it wasn’t!

As we left her, my husband said that we should wait and see what the biopsy revealed! I nearly killed him. Did he really believe that a leading consultant would tell someone they had cancer if there was any doubt!

I think the waiting to find out is awful. Once a diagnosis has been made you know what you are up against and get into fight mode.

I had a lumpectomy, further clearance, chemo and will finish my 23 rads next Friday. Life will be pear shaped for a few months but it does improve.

I have made many friends on this site and have found it to be such a great help the last 9 months.

Good luck for next week.

Funnily enough, although I wasn’t given any indication after my mamo and ultrasound I had a feeling that the breast care surgeon, nurse and radiologist were all well aware of the outcome and waiting for the results of the bio was just a formality. I do think they can tell within quite a high probability of what the results of the bio are going to be from the ultrasound.

Like it has already been said, I am sorry if this is not what you want to hear but false hope isn’t very helpful. I find the ups and downs of this disease one of the worse things to handle.
